First of all I want to point out I am still only playing on Warlord, I
am a newbie afterall...

I have noticed the extreme difference one (or two) free settlers from
goodie-huts makes when playing against AI opponents at least on lower
levels:
I can hold my own against the AIs (bounching between ranking
middle-civilization and top spot through the game) but if I get one
free settler, like I did yesterday, I suddenly pull away extremely
quick; mid game I had 1500 points on the ranking over second best
(Cathrina).

I understand part of it has to do with the fact that the AIs research
slower than "normal" on warlord, but the difference is still very
unbalanced.

Civ wouldn't be civ without free settlers. They don't come along often
but it's great when they do Smile

Ive just started playing Civ 4 too (im a veteran of the whole civ series but
have never played it on the really hard levels on earlier games as I didnt
like the techniques you had to use to do well on them!)

I agree - in Civ 4 getting a free settler makes a massive difference (much
more so than civ 3) because of the time needed to build settlers
(particularly at the start of the game). Dont be afraid to restart a new
game a few times to get a better start position - everyone else does!

The beauty of civ 2 was that a poor starting location would be compensated
by up to 6 techs.

A good start in Civ is vital. I am having trouble keeping scout/warrior
alive at beginning while AI civs seem to hoover up all barb huts - the
animals seem to think my flesh is way tastier.

One of my favourite start positions was the big island/continent with just
you on it - lots of huts and no competition! Trouble is, with Civ 4, the
barbarians can be really nasty - Axemen when you've still got
warriors/archers etc!

I think the barbarians are much more awkward than previous civ games - makes
it more of a challenge though in the early game!

I currently play with barbarians turned off for just that reason.
