Post subject: Free copy of Joysticks on DVD to first person who can best help me with this question - how to find horizontal hold on monitor for stand-up arcade game?
Archived from groups: rec>games>video>arcade>collecting (more info?)

Joysticks is a classic, early 80's teenage sexploitation Porky's
rip-off comedy set in a video arcade. I will send a free copy on DVD
via US media mail to the first person who can best help me with this
question. The more detailed the advice, the better. I am a novice at
arcade game repair and readily admit I don't know what the hell I'm
doing, but I really need help with this problem fast. I'll also be
sending a DVD to the only member who answered a previous post re this
topic. Thanks for your help, but I need a little more information.

I am trying to locate the horizontal hold control on a stand-up game.
The game (Victory Road, 1986) is in a non-original cabinet. I have
looked on the monitor chassis and anywhere else in the back of the game
that I could find anything resembling knobs, screws, or anything
adjustable. I have found controls for brightness and color, and on the
circuit board that sits underneath the monitor located circular posts
with adjustable rings that were marked V HOLD, H FREQ, and some others,
including one that said H CENTER, but had no adjustable ring, only a
connection that disappeared back underneath the circuit board. I
couldn't find a marking for H HOLD anywhere on the circuit board. I
don't have the game in front of me right now and am describing
everything from memory.

Where is the horizontal hold located on this or any other stand-up
game? What does it look like, and how can I find it? Thanks to anyone
who can help.

Mike, thank you very much - what you posted is exactly the type of info
I've been
looking for. Looking at the monitor chassis pics, my monitor most
closely resembles
the Electrohome GO-7. Based on the diagrams of the adjustment pots
on this board, it looks like the H FREQ pot is actually the HORIZONTAL
HOLD,
is that right? I have already tried monkeying with that pot, and
quickly turned it
back to its original position when the game's screen dissolved into
squiggles.

However, another member e-mailed me off-board & suggested that since
monitors can be mounted sideways, the more common problem is probably
with the VERTICAL HOLD, and I should try that pot. Does this sound
possible?

Please e-mail me your shipping address (send to erikose at juno.com)
so I can send you a copy of the Joysticks DVD. Smile

It does get confusing since the monitors frequently change orientation
but the controls reference vertical and horizontal. To simplify, the
short axis is the vertical and the long axis is horizontal regardless
of the monitor's mounting orientation.

So in a game like Centipede with a vertically mounted monitor (long
horizontal axis running vertically) for example if the game's image
were scrolling left to right, you'd actually adjust the vertical pot
for correction.

Thanks for the DVD!, I'll email my address.

Yes, that does sound probable. Try the vertical hold as well.
