Is there a frame rate (FPS) ceiling in UT2004? I ask because I can't
increase my FPS any more, no matter what I try.

My FPS is a steady average of 84/85, but another player with a better
system tells me he gets 90.

I don't think I particularly need more FPS, but I have just put together
this new PC and with some tweaking, I've have been steadily increasing
my 3DMark06 score. I haven't seen any improvements in UT though. Why is
this?

Because UT2004 is CPU limited and 3DMark is basically a video card
test. The only way to improve UT2004 performance is via a faster
processor (and to some small degree, faster memory).

I'm assuming you're benchmarking UT2004 by doing a 'stat fps' and then
watching the framerate counter in the top right of the screen. It's
very difficult to judge improvements that way because it's not
repeatable. What you need is a benchmark utility for UT2004, and it
just so happens you can download one here:

http://ut2k3botbench.sourceforge.net/index.php

I would be interested to see what your system does with the "Official
UMark" test. If you're interested in running it, here's how:

1. Start UMark (doh)
2. Select a resolution.
3. Select "High Image Quality" for detail level.
4. There's a vertical bar with an arrow on it on the far side of
the window. Click that to get a fly-out window.
5. Click on the "Preset Tests" button.
6. Select the "Official UMark 2004 test" and click on "Use".
This will populate the list with six maps from six different
gametypes.
7. Click on "Benchmark".

Because you selected "High Image Quality", the program will use a
custom .ini file with all of the eye candy turned on. After running
through a pre-determined botmatch sequence for each map, you will get
a results window with scores for each map. Click on the View
Graphs/Submit button to get a new graphic window with a final score on
the bottom. Grab a screenshot and post it here and we'll see how your
new rig does!

Ah, I've checked these already. I couldn't find where to disable v-sync
in my UT settings. Did I miss it? :s I remember I used to do this in UT99.

My monitor refresh doesn't go above 60hz. It's an LG flat-panel.

Hey thanks for your interest Folk Smile

I ran UMark. Each demo ran very fast (much faster than in normal
play)... is that normal?

Here's the screenie.. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/steveo2/UMark.jpg

God, I feel bad. I just ran mine and ended up with 440.799. Thought I had a
pretty decent setup. Sad

Perhaps I'll try again on a fresh reboot...

Yeah. In benchmark mode, UT plays back a pre-recorded demo as fast as
it possibly can in order to measure the maximum framerate that your
system can render. You want to see it go really fast. <g>

>Here's the screenie.. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/steveo2/UMark.jpg

Very nice.

Here's one of mine at stock speed. I ran this one just now:

http://personal.lig.bellsouth.net/l/e/leroy200/Umark%2001-08-07.JPG

And here's one when I had the same rig overclocked to the max. This
one's almost two years old. I did it right after building it. I
don't overclock it any more... that was just for kicks.

http://personal.lig.bellsouth.net/l/e/leroy200/UMark.JPG

One of the good things about UMark is that you can use it to see how
changing in-game visual settings affects your performance. If you
choose "Current Settings" for detail level, then it will use the same
settings you use when you play... in other words it uses your
ut2004.ini file instead of a custom one. So crank everything to the
max, run a benchmark and then selectively lower settings to see what
gives you the most improvement. That way you can fine tune the
settings for the best tradeoff between visuals and gameplay. After
several boring hours over rainy Sunday afternoons, this is what mine
ended up looking like:

http://personal.lig.bellsouth.net/l/e/leroy200/UT2004-Untitled-1-8-200...0103.JP

Instead of using the preset demo in UMark, I made my own. It's easy
to do... select the map in the center of UMark's window and then click
'Add' on the flyout menu. Once you get the list the way you want it,
click on 'Save List' and call it whatever you like. Then you can use
it any time you want. I selected only ONS maps, since that's all I
play.

Make sure you don't have vsync locked to 'on' in your graphics
drivers. A dead giveaway would be that your maximum framerate is
never higher than your refresh rate.

If that's not the case, then I offer my condolences. Wink

You probably have V-sync enabled and your monitor refresh is 85.

Interesting stuff. Your overclocked score is fantastic, especially
considering your computer was 2 years old!
I haven't got around to overclocking my cpu yet.. I believe there's
plenty of potential in the Core 2 Duo Smile

My UMark 'High Image Quality' result was 749.650688. My 'Current
Settings' result from a test just now is 1059.407921.

I'm still puzzled. Why is my in-game FPS (stat fps) fixed on 84/85? Is
it to do with v-sync? I couldn't find it in UT's Settings :s I'm not
even sure if v-sync applies to these flat-panel monitors.

On the bright side, now you have an excuse to upgrade! Smile

I haven't played UT in ages, but isn't there a menu option that allows
you to set a maximum frame rate?

It does, but if your monitor is set to 60 and you have V-sync disabled
(usually in your graphics control panel in Windows) then that isn't
the issue.

Are you testing online? There's a framerate cap for online play.

Ah. Yes I tested online. Does anyone play the offline game? :s
I bet that framerate-cap is 85! The guy who told me he gets 90 must be
fibbing!

Btw, I've just updated my BIOS and gone through the settings, and
improved my 3DMark06 score by 4 points! Woohoo Wink

I can't wait to overclock the cpu, but I'm still swotting-up.. doing a
bit of reading. I'll report back Smile
