Maybe a stupid question, apologies - did try a search but not
conclusive..
Previously have a little 14" TV and was very pleased with the picture
quality - this broke so I swapped in a little flatscreen I bought
recently. I must admit it wasn't one of the pricier ones - but I was
still surprised to see that PS2 games don't seem to look as good as
before. Can't seem to get a balance of colour, sharpness, brightness
etc., and framerate doesn't seem as smooth somehow.
Do these types of TVs vary much by quality in terms of price? Or is
there something else I've missed? >> Stay informed about: Flatscreen TV picture quality with my 2 |

Thanks a lot for the info Chris F and Slitheen. I didn't realise the
difference I could get with those suggestions so I will give them a go.
Not sure I'll quite make up the deficit though - GT4 on my old telly
looked really grand.. I'll give it a go and like you say maybe I'll get
used to it! >> Stay informed about: Flatscreen TV picture quality with my 2 |

Well, a few years "difference", that's what. Obviously, the more powerful
XBOX came out long after PS2, and its games, on the whole but not without
exception, look better than PS2 games. They look sharper and more detailed
for one. Maybe this difference is more pronounced on your new telly? Also,
if the SCART adapter/composite lead that Chris and I have described to you
is being used with your XBOX - buy the advanced SCART/RGB lead for that
also, and see the difference again. RGB improves things no end. It really
will make a massive difference.
Also, after a few weeks, you get used to the picture you have. It took me
ages to get used to the LCD in the kitchen, I kept moaning for the CRT to be
put back - but now I am used to it. They also take a bit to 'break
in'....and appear to me to look better after a few weeks. >> Stay informed about: Flatscreen TV picture quality with my 2 |

Take a look in the manual for the new TV and tell me what it says for
'response time' under the system specifications page - this is measured in
'ms' ...for example 17ms (milliseconds?).
This is the panel's response time. If it's a high number, say higher than
17ms.....I'm afraid it is very poor for gaming, or for watching any high
speed moving images...like football (you see 'trailers' after the
ball....and the picture seems to stagger a bit). The old adage is that 17ms
or less is preferable. My computer monitor has 12ms, and is fine for gaming
*for me*, some will argue even this is poor. My other LCD's, for portable TV
viewing, are all 17ms. If yours says 20-25ms, for example, I'm afraid this
is very poor indeed. Fine for watching your average TV prog, not for
watching fast paced sports or playing games on - although this will be
*exactly* the same for the XBOX games too. >> Stay informed about: Flatscreen TV picture quality with my 2 |

There were just a couple of specific models I was looking at a small while
back, one Sony Wega and one...could have been a Philips - they were
massively available in the states, not here though...although you could
supposedly buy them here. They carry the same models here and there, even
though one is NTSC and one is PAL - well, Sony definitely do, same model
number but PAL or NTSC depending where you buy it. I remember looking for
the Sony one in particular, and there was tons available from USA websites,
only one place carried the Sony model here and they were out of stock. I
also googled earlier tonight and found a few mentions of them being, in
general, more prevalent there than here. This was online though, not
shopping there....which could be very different.
I think one of these would be perfect for me. CRT...but HD. Heaven >> Stay informed about: Flatscreen TV picture quality with my 2 |

I think I binned the manual but this sounds very plausible. Maybe as I
was mostly playing GT4 on the PS2 (which looked great on the old TV)
and then X-Box games on the LCD, I didn't notice much difference in the
graphics across the two formats (especially as GT4 has quite incredible
visuals in some areas - some of the mountain village tracks, the cars
etc.) Still seems a bit odd as the X-box games looked good in general
on the LCD screen. Still a bit bemused - maybe I'll try my other spare
TV (only option is RF adaptor though!) and see how the PS2 looks again
then.. >> Stay informed about: Flatscreen TV picture quality with my 2 |

Found the manual...16ms...so not great but not terrible I guess?
The screen when gaming just looks drab somehow, no vibrancy. If I turn
the brightness up - which I need to - it's still kind of dull, and the
colours don't seem to bounce out of the screen somehow. Maybe one
problem is playing a few demos of Gotham on the 360 in a shop - I'm
sure the brain stores the highest visuals encountered even in small
doses of play.. >> Stay informed about: Flatscreen TV picture quality with my 2 |
