With so many sequels being released every year, I'm sure not all are
worthy successors. I'm curious to know what are your favorite video
game series? Also, mention the ones you think are the best out of that
series. Here's my list in no particular order:
1)Y's
Y's I&II, Y's IV (TurboDuo) - These had the most catchy tunes. Also,
the art direction and voice acting (in I&II) remain the very best to
this day.
2)Shinobi
Super Shinobi I & II (Mega Drive) - Both these games had an incredible
soundtrack, the first composed by the legendary Yuzo Koshiro. Gameplay
is classic 2d that can't be found these days. The graphics have
surprisingly aged quite well too.
3)Thunderforce
TF III & IV (Mega Drive) - Both games had a kick ass soundtrack that
couldn't sound better on any other hardware. Also, one of the few
shoot em ups I enjoy. A sequel was made for PlayStation and Saturn but
could not best these.
4)Panzer Dragoon
PD II Zwei & Saga (Saturn) - The atmosphere Team Andromeda created here
is truly unique and magical. Both games make me a proud Saturn owner.
5)Wipeout
XL & 3 (PlayStation) - Soundtrack composed by trance's top artist.
Both versions are much more playable on the PS2 (load times were
horrible on PSone). Pretty steep learning curve but very rewarding
once you got the hang of it.
6)Phantasy Star
1, 2 & IV (Genesis) - The first one was revolutionary. Definitely an
experience unlike any other at that time. These three had the most
compelling storyline, memorable soundtracks and amazing artwork
(especially loved the character designs and world created by the
designers). It seems that no other RPG series has captured and
captivated my interest since then.
7)Vampire/Darkstalkers
Vampire Savior (Arcade & Saturn) - VS is my all time favorite 2d
fighter. The Saturn version is even better than the arcade since it's
virtually arcade perfect with more characters. Too bad it doesn't get
tournament play.
8)Bomberman
Super Bomberman 2 (SNES) & Saturn Bomberman (Saturn) - Lots of
incarnations. One of the best multi-player and party games. Gets
crazy when you have four or more friends.
9)Bare Knuckle
2 & 3 (Mega Drive) - This one was heavily influenced by Capcom's Final
Fight series. But I prefer this much more and like all games in the
series. Awesome soundtrack. Probably the peak of 2d beat em ups. Two
had the best overall presentation, level design and music. Three had
the best graphics and gameplay although SoA managed to butcher the US
version.
10)Virtua Tennis
2 & 3 (Arcade & Dreamcast) - One of the few sports games I enjoy and
definitely one of the most addicting gameplays. Very simple and easy
to pick up (even among my friends who've never played video games can
learn after few matches) but has enough depth and difficulty to reward
those willing to master the mechanics. Ideal with 4 players on a
doubles match which can be pretty intense on high level of play. I
look forward to a faithful home console translation of the recently
released arcade Virtua Tennis 3.
11)Virtua Fighter
VF4:Evolution (Arcade & PS2) - My all time favorite 3d fighter. By far
the deepest fighting game. Pioneered character customizations. I
liked 2 the best, that is until I played Evolution. I tried going back
but it's pretty difficult considering how much more refined the
graphics and gameplay have become. Too bad Final Tuned was never
ported to a home console. I'm highly anticipating the recently
released Virtua Fighter 5. It's sad this rarely gets played
competitively outside Japan.
12)Street Fighter
SFA2 & SFIII: 3s (Arcade, Saturn & PS2) - I enjoy most of the games in
this series but prefer and play these two the most. Third strike gets
plenty of tournament play. I hope the recently released alpha
anthology / fighters generation will spark enough interest to generate
more competitive and a revival in tournament play.
13)Soul Calibur
1, 2 & 3 (Arcade, Dreamcast & PS2) - Hmm, it's difficult to pick one so
I mention all games in the series. I've had and have most fun playing
with the first one on Dreamcast. The third part has some of the nicest
looking background stages though.
14)Mario Kart
Super Mario Kart (SNES) & Double Dash (Gamecube) - The original on SNES
had and still has one of the most fun and addicting two player battle
modes. Double dash with four players is the probably as good as it
gets for racing madness. Not generally into portable games but I've
seen and briefly played Mario Kart DS and I must say it's an incredible
game too.
15)Castlevania
Castlevania III (Famicom) & Dracula X (PC Engine) - Dracula X on PC
Engine is probably the last true Castlevania game. It had the most
amazing soundtrack and old school gameplay. >> Stay informed about: Favorite video game series |

one and two were awesome, but three only took me a few hours to beat.
it was kinda like going from zelda to link on the nes. not that i
didn't love link. speaking of which, i didn't much care for any zeldas
other than the first two. i never played link's awakening, though.
never picked up 4. i think the duo version was called "mask of ys."
there was a different snes version called something like "sun of ys" or
something like that.

revenge of shinobi has one of the all time greatest cart soundtracks--i
just love the chinatown level's music. this is also the best genesis
game ever released.

saga was the masterpiece of the series.

the greatest thing about three was that you basically got a sasha ep
for free. xl was the best wipeout release by far. actually, most of
the xl team went on to do quantum redshift for the xbox. qr is the
true heir to the wipeout crown. it's such a shame that qr was panned
in the reviews 'cause it is truly amazing.

the first one blew my mind: i was lucky enough to get it when it came
out right along with miracle warriors. i was so looking forward to
two, but it ended up not being very good. two had a great concept, but
it was just super slow moving and got rid of the 3d dungeons! i
consider final fantasy 8 the ultimate version of phantasy star 2.

dracula x was awesome. that was another that i got my hands on when it
was released back in 1994. don't let anyone tell you that dracula x is
the best castlevania if they're just trying to posture 'cause they know
you probably haven't played it...or, even heard of it, for that matter.
symphony of the night is the best castlevania. but, drac x sure is
incredible...it's right up there with the first one in my book.
here are two games that could have become amazing series, but just
didn't happen:
act raiser. first one was incredible and included an amazing
soundtrack by yuzo himself. the second one blew.
chakan. just a great game. had that "american" look of genesis games
from the early ninties. what i mean is that it had that grainy look of
batman returns. a sequel was rumored to be in the works on the dc, but
i never heard anything about it after that. >> Stay informed about: Favorite video game series |

I think there were about 2-3 different editions of Ys IV but consider
the Turbo Duo also known as the Dawn of Ys as the definitive version.
It was a lot like the first two with more close up cut scenes, voice
acting and improved graphics and gameplay. Fortunately, someone
created a patch and converted all the Japanese text into english.
There's been a rather healthy number of variations of Ys and from my
initial impressions, none have done the series justice.

Wow, thanks for pointing this out. Never really heard of Quantum
Redshift before but I guess you can consider it the 'spiritual'
successor of Wipeout then. I also like XL the most. This series had
style and loads of it. Quirex forever!

Yup, Streets of Rage in Europe and America.

Yes, Sotn was awesome. True sequel to Dracula X, but it had elements
of an RPG which deviated slightly from the original (much like
Castlevania 2: Simon's quest). In any case, Dracula X on Super CD is
the sole reason I upgraded my PC Engine to super system card version
3.01 and it came at a high cost. Of course in the end it was all worth
it. >> Stay informed about: Favorite video game series |

Hmm...
ThunderForce II was (c)1989 Technosoft, but then I'm seeing this:
ThunderForce III, (c)1990 Technosoft (cartridge label also says Distrbuted
by HOT-B USA, Inc.)
Whip Rush, (c)1990 Renovation Products
Gaiares (c)1990 Telenet/Renovation
Granada, (c)1990 Renovation (opening title screen sequence also shows Wolf
Team)
Sol-Deace (c)1992 Wolf Team (cartridge label says (c)1991 Renovation
Products, Inc.)
Elemental Master, (c)1990, 1993 Technosoft, distributed by Renovation
Products.
I've also noticed that the voice used in Granada is very similar to the
voice used in ThunderForce II, III, and ThunderForce Iv/Lightening Force.
The Granada cartridge label also shows: Renovation Products, Inc a
subsidiary of Telenet Japan, Inc.
So, was there some soft of spinoff from Technosoft that formed Wolf Team or
Telenet/Renovation? Or did Technosoft just use Renovation to distribute some
of their games in 1990? >> Stay informed about: Favorite video game series |

Yes, Shinobi III is excellent. I especially liked the added gameplay
tweaks (faster gameplay, running, climbing, etc.) Super Shinobi I and
II is the same as Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi III in the US. It's
interesting that in Japan, Shadow Dancer wasn't considered a true
sequel to the series (heck, I don't even think it was a faithful port
of the arcade). In any case, I doubt if any remakes or retro
collections of Revenge of Shinobi would include Spiderman, Batman,
Rambo, Godzilla and the Terminator all as enemies the original cart
had.

Being a huge fan of 1 and 2, I was pretty dissapointed with 3. It
didn't seem like part of the series at all. Perhaps if they named it
some other title things would've turned out differently?

You bet. I still play the first part once in awhile. It introduced
the team tactics technique that was sorely missing in the sequel and
brought back in part 3.

You'd be surprised. Old timers (circa mid 90s) that were champs in
alpha 2 (Alex Valle, Jason Cole, Mike Watson, etc.) although really
good rarely come out on top. At least, not on the newer games which
are more complex. Granted they get really far during tournies but
there are a bunch of the younger, newer generation of gamers out there
that are very competitive and seem to have the skills required to
master newer and more difficult techniques (parries, 20+hit combos,
etc.).

Nah, Dracula X Chi no Rondo was the hallmark. One series that could've
really benefitted from a Metroid style play is Zillion though. Such a
shame the series never did progress beyond the first one.

Virtual On. Man I used to play this a lot at the arcades. But this
was of of those games that I felt you needed the twin sticks and two
separate monitors to really enjoy. Never got a chance to play any of
the sequels or home ports. >> Stay informed about: Favorite video game series |

yeah, zillion was one of the truly awesome games on the sms. it really
drove me insane that the shoot and jump buttons were reversed from
normal...that messed me up a lot. it's such a shame that zillion 2:
the tri-formation cycle blew dog. i was so excited for zillion 2 that
i had to make the poor chick at children's palace search under the
counter to see if they had it when it wasn't out on the shelf. i took
it home thinking it was going to be awesome and "tri-formation cycle"
must've been some reference to a biological process you uncover in the
game.
unfortunately, "tri-formation cycle" referred to a motorcycle that
could change into a robot. lame.
no, i've never tried otogi, either. i'll have to go out and check
those out when i can... >> Stay informed about: Favorite video game series |

Pretty much any VF is awesome by me, I can find myself firing any one of

I doubt gamers today have the patience and talent to play well in a SF

What, you don't like the Castlevania skinned Super Metroid games?
I'd add some series, but I'm not much of a series fan myself. Ah, what
the heck, Sonic 2, Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic Adventure 1+2 probably
have gotten as much playtime by me as a series as any of my actual
favorite action games ever did. Virtual On and Virtual On Oratario
Tangram would compete if I could find anybody willing to play them. I

Have you played the Otogi games by From Software and published by Sega
on the Xbox? Reading IGN's previews of Chakan for the Dreamcast really
has me thinking that somehow or another the code ended up in these
games. The main character looks a lot like Chakan also...

All your choices are very good I would love to find Y's
to play on my Turbo.I'm suprised no one has mentioned the Tomb Raider
Series.I have all the console versions that were put out.Dreamcast
Playstation 1 and 2,Saturn and now XBOX.All were very fun to play with
1 exception. We all no which one.The Angel of Darkness.I just bought it
to keep the collection together. My personal favorite of the series was
Tomb Raider II.But overall they are a good series of games.I'm playing
TombRaider Legend now on my XboxFor golf fans the PGA TOUR series was
good and also Tiger Woods Golf was great.I have all of Tigers games for
the PS1,2 and Xbox.I bought the Xbox 360 Tiger Woods 2006 at launch and
within a week[ after a lot of vomiting] took it back
to Eb Games and took a $40.00 hickey.I never sell or trade games hardly
at all. EA SPORTS did not have it in the game with its newest Tiger
Woods golf game.I just hope next year they will go back to the old
format. Bruce >> Stay informed about: Favorite video game series |
