The Gold version would effectively replace your original, but would
make it fully up to date. You'd still want the gold edition patch (a
separate download), but it will run all of the Fantastic Worlds
scenarios (including ones off the net).
There is a separate Fantastic Worlds patch someplace -- was on the
Microprose Civ2 site once upon a time. Supposedly, it will work on
plain Civ2, allowing you to run FW scenarios. But the Gold edition
offers a better patch -- they did more fixes after that point,
multiplayer can be fun as well.
