So I've been playing since it came out and while I love the game it
sure does freeze up a lot. There doesn't appear to be any rhyme or
reason to it either.
I've had it lock up during the re-load animation. I've had it lock up
randomly. Just now I (as the character) slept for 8 hours, unloaded
some gear to get un-encumbered and fast traveled back to Megaton only
to have it lose all audio and video ending up at a lovely dark blue
screen.
It doesn't seem to be platform dependent either, PS3 and PC owners are
reporting similar problems.
So if you get it, remember - Save early, save often. I don't know if
the game went through a full round of QA or if they just decided "x
number of freezes per hour are within operating guidelines" or
something.
You'd think since they based it on the Oblivion engine they'd have
more of the kinks worked out.

I got it on the PC and I've had about 3 crashes to desktop in a LOT of
playing hours so it's not that bad by PC standards of game stability. At
least on my hardware.

You've think seeing as the Xbox and PS3 are locked down hardware that it's
be nearly kink free on those two platforms. >> Stay informed about: Fallout 3 - great game, but it freezes a lot... |

Well, this IS Bethesda, remember. Their lack of QA/bugtesting is
legendary. I mean, I love Oblivion, but it's obvious that with them,
it's ambition first, reliability second. >> Stay informed about: Fallout 3 - great game, but it freezes a lot... |

That sucks. Hopefully you'll get it back in the 5 days it took them to

Same here, but only 13 hours in. So far it runs better than Oblivion ever did.

Finally put in my copy of Fallout3 and didnt have any issues at all. I
put in 5 hours total so far tonight.
I hated the vault I was worried the rest of the game would look that
bad. But outside looked much better , the overall look of the game is
nice,but the vault was horrid.
I was having trouble staying awake in the Vault ,I don't know why ,I
guess after playin frantic deathmatches in COD5 ,Fallout3 vault was a
boring ugly looking snooze fest ,but once you leave the
fault ,different story ,looks pretty good. I actually like the VATS
system , I didn't think I'd use it ,but it reminds me of the old-
school turn based combat. The regular combat as expected is wonky
wobbly horrible stuff, but I knew that already ,Bethseda are masters at
RPG storytelling but not so good with free form combat. Until we get a
RPG with the combat of COD and the depth of Oblivion ,I'll take
Fallout3 with relish.
I still tend to skip through the dialogue and just speedread the
important stuff, but overall a Bethseda solid RPG.
I can see myself playing this game for around 200 hours . >> Stay informed about: Fallout 3 - great game, but it freezes a lot... |

I jinxed myself.
After about an hour last night the screen went blank and the game
froze. I had just passed an autosave point so I didn't lose anything.
Last two hours of playing last night went smooth. >> Stay informed about: Fallout 3 - great game, but it freezes a lot... |

People complain about the bugs in Oblivion and now Fallout 3, but when
you think about how hard it is to QA an open-ended enviroment of this
size a few lockups are pretty forgiveable. I've only had one lockup
in 15 hours, and it wan't even really a lockup I just couldn't move
but a few steps any direction and the camera was stuck in 3rd person.
I had to quit and reload from the last autosave which at least Fallout
3 does plenty of. >> Stay informed about: Fallout 3 - great game, but it freezes a lot... |
