Hello everyone, I just came in to see if anyone was talking about
the new Fallout, fallout 3 and to my amazement I didn't see one post. So
if you all have already talked about it, forgive me and just move on...
I was reading about it in the april issue of OXM and if you havent
heard yet, Bethesda is making it. It is due out this fall, no specific
date yet, and from what the article is saying if half of it is true, it
really seems this will be the next Obilvion.
The lead designer for Bethesda when asked if it is Oblivion with
guns, Emil Pagliarulo stated, "in all the best ways".
It is a good article so if you haven't read it yet you may want
to.

It's so far away nobody is talking about it yet. Other than being
based on two very good games there's not much to say. We have a teaser
trailer and that's about it. We don't even know what kind of RPG it's
going to be (please no point-and click, please no point-and click,
please no point-and click).

Once there's a firm date for it and more detailed trailers then you'll
see discussion about it, but for now it's just on a bunch of watch
lists.

I've been watching this game for along time and many on here have to
too,but the release date is so far away its not up on anyone immediate
radar as of yet.

There is a somewhat official release date of 09/09/08 though likely
that might change. (source EBGames in-store printout sheet)

Is it Oblivion with guns? Only in all the best ways .
It's mainly a FPS ,set in an open world ala Oblivion, Think destruction
as the new 'trees' whereas Oblivion was forest heavy Fallout3 is
post-nuclear wasteland.
You'll spend the first 18 game years of your life in Vault-101, I won't
spoil what takes place in Vault-101 but its where in the game you set
'create' your characters gender, class, skills, etc. But if you want check
out OXM #82 ,it's all detailed.

Gun Weapons can be combined, repaired, upgraded, but they do degrade over
time so you'll have to scavenge for more weapons/parts.
You'll get conventional weapons like flamethrowers. You'll get some kool
weapons like a shoulder mounted nuclear cluster bombs ,while small, all
detonate in nuclear mushroom cloud form.
You'll search and find schematics to make DIY weapons like a lunchbox
and bottlecaps combo that makes a mean shrapnel bomb.

If you so choose to save the dog at the junkyard he'll be your companion
and join your party and help with battles,he's a carryover from the
other Fallout games, but he won't be a weak annoying wussy that you'll
have to babysit, but he will need healing in battles. But its up to the
player if you want him in your party, you have to save him at the
junkyard.

As in true Oblivion fashion and more, the NPC will all have dynamic
lives and each one will have more detailed things to do, and each
conversation will have multiple various outcomes.

THE COMBAT :you can pause the battle (if you want) by pressing RB and
aim for specific body parts ,head, arms, legs, torso.
You could shoot the gun from there hand, shoot them in the leg to cripple
or maim them,or shoot in the head to blind or instant kill them. Each
body part has a % hit. There's also a cinematic you'll see when the
bullet hits from separate angles, but don't think that its a cutscenes
heavy game,ITS NOT ,its still Big and open like Oblivion.
It's just very heavy on ballistics gore, where you'll see mutants leg get
shot off or an eyeball rolling down the hill from the target you just
hit with a headshot.
Think Quentin Tarantino directed Oblivion with guns and you get the idea
of Fallout3.

FYI, while you're waiting, the game that Fallout was based on was
called "Wasteland" and it's officially abandonware now...

http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/436

The PC version kind of sucks (16 colors), but if you turn up a
Commodore 64 emulator it's far superior.

Yes I know what you mean about such a far away release date, but
the amazing thing to me is that the makers of the all time best console
RPG game are making it and all that I have read is the 4 page article in
OXM and almost everything online is the exact same article...and yes it
has a tentative release date in the fall...but hell I and millions of
others were chomping at the bit for GTA4 last year at this time and
still have to wait another month, but for this game the fall is only 6
months away...call me biased when it comes to bethesda granted because
of Oblivion and its kin...but if I was head of marketing I would be
talking about this game on the gaming news circuit everyday...just seems
to me the powers that be sometimes purposely downplay certain games for
reasons that are unknown to me...and then you get the games like mass
effect which all in all was a GOOD game but nowhere near the RPG's of
Resident Evil ( the early games ) Oblivion, Final Fantasy, Silent Hill
and even LEGO star wars (ha ha, sorry just had to say it ) and look at
all the marketing it got...the graphics were great but my god the game
play was...lacking...maybe one of these days the makers of the games
will realize it is all about the game play...Anyone remember Resident
Evil for the PS1...the graphics sucked but the game play was
awesome...until they got it on the PS2, upgraded the graphics and then
every turn around a corner or opened a door and BAM a load screne...oh
well, let me off of my soap box. Y'all have a great day...

I haven't really seen anything about the game. I had Fallout and
Fallout 2 on the PC but sold them before even opening them. Does this
look to continue the quality I've heard about for the first two games
in the series?

And what do you think is the all-time best console RPG? I think most
people would say Mass Effect. It might have seemed like it needed more
time tweaking out the technical issues but from the game standpoint,
everyone goes crazy over the RPG aspect.

I think Oblivion is better than ME as a RPG due to being more open
ended with a lot more to explore and do. Oblivion also wins in the
ability to customize and develop your character's traits. ME is a
better RPG as far as the story goes and the NPC's are much more
fleshed out. So depends on what aspect you like in a RPG I guess.

Yeah, I loved Wasteland. Still play it, too. Don't forget the sausages.

Why? Fallout 1 had an annoying time limit on a big part of the main quest.
But Fallout 2 was pure gold.

I would have to say for me it is Oblivion...I am a long time fan of the
early resident evils (not really a RPG), final fantasy, silent hill,
Legend of Zelda, shining soul, phantasy star and of course
lunar...etc...until for example on RE they decided that graphics should
be more important than game play...RE was great on PS1...it was all
about the game play...not just load screens...

So back to Oblivion...for a console just the huge amount of open space,
not linear at all, except of course when you do decide to do the main
quest...but the "if you can see it, you can go there" aspect of the game
to me is the best part of it...and that is what supposedly is in store
for Fallout 3.

Now I am not taking anything away from ME I bought that game also, but
for my money the "quests" in oblivion are better...I also am not a fan
of the team concept when you are dealing with AI during the game...I
like the first person games when you really arent given any direction or
instructions and you are put in the "world" to fend for yourself and
figure out what to do...I am sure you remember MYST...I absolutely loved
that game...even though I wanted to through my keyboard through the
window many many many times...

When it all comes down it...for me it is all in how the game draws you
into it...same as with a book or movie...and Oblivion did a better job
of it for me...

Oblivion for me too,I liked Mass Effect but it had some stale boring
moments and the dialogue got tedious and uninspiring. But overall
Oblivion with the expansions is mezmerizing. I'll admit I skipped
through allot of the dialogue in Oblivion too,but overall it's a massive
game of exploration. Something I love in videogaming is the exploration
aspect, ever knowing whats over the next hill or wondering whats gonna be
in the next cave. Oblivion is one of those rare games ,that seem like a
bargain @$60. Fallot3 looks every bit as good as Oblivion and I'm sure
it won't dissapoint.
