No it doesn't make sense, NVIDIA's drivers are structured to support all
GPU's without having specific versions cutting off support without
reason. The current Forcewares will work with an FX without a problem,
I'm using them on an FX5700 and 5600 in two other systems and have no
problems.

They do nothing to help it optimization wise, but most commonly they
take nothing away either, or take very little away in benchmarks like
3DMark03, etc. Normally the image quality enhancements and mip
filtering optimizations trickle their way down into older hardware as
well. For example, on a Geforce 3 TI200, the newer 7x.xx and 8x.xx
drivers have MUCH better texture filtering quality and better 2D quality
overall.
In this instance, you DO need a relatively new driver to support the DX9
software API. It was first supported in 52.16 for FX cards. If the OP
is still bent on finding an old and stable driver, I recommend the 71.84
WHQL set. You can find them on the FTP:
ftp://download.nvidia.com/windows/71.84_whql
Another well established set is 77.76:
ftp://download.nvidia.com/windows/77.77
(.77 just had one minor fix added, same exact driver).
The 8x.xx series added some major tweaks to the way the GPU is addressed
and for monitor support, so it's understandable there might be some
bugs, however I must reiterate that I have no problems with an FX5700
using the newest 81.98 set.
