Hi Troops,
I'm back, sort of. My transition to Linux took a bit longer than expected,
but I will never go back. Actually I've been running for a long time, but
just now found the Pan newsreader. It looks and feels almost exactly like
Forte Agent, which is what I was used to.
The old FTP server was running in windows. Gone now. I could use some
advice on how to set it back up on my Linux box.
Details:
PureFTPd with the PureAdmin GUI
Ubuntu Linux version 6.10 "Edgy Eft".
If nobody knows I'll just keep poking at it and figure it out sooner or
later.
Best,
Tom >> Stay informed about: FTP server. News and questions. |

I attempted to set up my own FTP, it works partially, but I'm having issues,
and don't have time to correct them now that we're moving >.<
Any tips on setting up an FTP on windows?

Hi Hyper,
I bought software for the windows ftp server and it worked great.
http://www.code-crafters.com/
It will do everything that you want it to do, and the tech support is top
notch.
I also bought the email server. That worked well too, but I couldn't use
it. Spam filters know which ip addresses are residential, and which are
commercial. I'm on Road Runner residential, which put me in the "probably
spam" category. My server was black listed. The cure would have been to
pay 3 times as much for business class. Nah.
Back to the ftp server. It lets you limit anonymous users to a particular
directory tree. Folks who want to upload can be given that privilege in a
limited range. Friends can be given access to any directory or tree that
you like, with or without upload, delete, etc. privileges. Pretty cool.
Then again, you might not want to put money into a windows package just
now. That house of cards is looking pretty wobbly.

Best,
Tom
Good luck.

Well, no-one's going to buy Vista, true, but I doubt anyone will stop
using XP as long as they play games that don't have native Linux
executables. <g>

All the people that buy retail shelf PC's will be buying whatever is
preinstalled on them, whether laptop or desktop. I reckon M$ fully
realizes this is their avenue to the public for some time to come. I
was very ready to leave 9x and NT behind. Not at all ready to even play
with the Vista Beta2 I have.
Egads man... I'm actually *enjoying* using XP Pro 32 and 64 :-\

Such people are almost never hardcore gamers, though <g> We build our
own Or at least specify the components we want and then install our
own choice of OS. <g>

I was ecstatic to leave Win98 behind, I had nothing but problems with
it. Not so happy to have to leave Windows 2000 for XP but that was a
necessary evil since 2K's hardware detection in setup didn't like
something in this box. LOL

I've still never run W2K. But I've never run ME either so hey I
got into XP Pro with the public beta RC2, and have stayed with it ever
since. My laptop came with XP Home SP2 on it. I like XP. It's easy to
get along with!

Vista is going to have super duper hardware detection. It polls your I/O
cards 30 times per second looking for leaks between Hollywood and your
eyes. Your Vista machine will never do better than 640 x 480, even if you
bought the DVD. Nuts to that. I'm done with Bill.

I'm going to keep xp running until it turns 10, when I move back to BeOS's
siblings and forget what Linux is, or that I even know who makes windows.
