On 5/15/2008 6:29 AM, wim.dijkgraaf went clickity clack on the keyboard
and produced this interesting bit of text:

BOOT.INI is a file that's marked as being hidden, system and read-only.
You need to change the attributes. The easiest way is to do it from
the command line. Go to the Start menu, select Run and type in CMD.
This will open a command line window. Type in the following:

C:
CD \
ATTRIB -R -H -S BOOT.INI
NOTEPAD BOOT.INI

At this point you can edit the file as you wish. After you're done
you'll need to set the attributes the way they were. In the command
line window type in the following:

ATTRIB +R +H +S BOOT.INI

and then you can close the window.

Just for your edification, ATTRIB is a program which allows you to deal
with file attributes. Specifically, the four attributes that can be
managed are read-only, hidden, system and archive. (There are other
attributes, but those are beyond the scope of ATTRIB.)

There is a different way to do this, but if you're not comfortable with
doing command line editing, I don't recommend it. It's by using a
program called BOOTCFG.EXE. Frankly, I prefer to do it the way I
describe above. It allows me to muck with things using a comfortable
interface.

SP2 for FSX already adds its ability to use >2Gb address space so it
doesn't require changing by this or similor utilities.
I think the /3GB switch still requires adding to the BOOT.INI. In
fact it must require changing as I got OOM errors using SP2 until I
changed my BOOT.INI

I got the command prompt by clicking Start>Run then type CMD.
the black 'DOS' Window will open. I then carefully typed the command at the
c:\ prompt as was done when using DOS operating system.
Sorry, Wim. I'm not a big enough geek to offer much help other than point to
sites I found.
