Hi

I run the following:-

Asus P5W DH Deluxe
Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4 - overclocked to 2.88
4 Gb Kingston PC2 - 6400
2x ATI X1950XTX Crossfire
Windows XP

Will FSX improve performance to any significant degree if I upgrade my CPU?
Was thinking of either a Core 2 Quad 6600 2.4 or a Core 2 Duo E6850 3.0

Any comments / advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
John Hellingsworth

The Asus P5W DH Board only supports up to 1066MHz FSB processors, so the
E6850 Core 2 Duo which has a 1333MHz FSB will not be suitable.

FSX with SP1 seems to offer improved multi-core processing support, and
posts in this group and others seem to indicate an improvement in
performance of a quad core compared to a dual core at the same or similar
speed. I use a C2D E6700 clocked at 3.4GHz, but I have not tried a Quad
Core.

Whether the financial outlay will be worth the results for you is
questionable.

Regards,

Keith A

I currently have the same processor, and if I were contemplating upgrading
my cpu for FSX, I would be very hesitant given the choices. I will most
likely wait for the next generation.
FSX likes brute cpu horsepower. You already have your E6600 running at 2.88
ghz. I am not sure the quad cores, are as overclockable as the current cpu
you have now. In my mind, you would probably need to get something to get
you to at least 3.3 ghz plus, before you see a noticeable improvement in
FSX. You may see a little, going to quad core, but again if you can't
overclock it to at least your current overclock, or beyond, that little may
just not justify the cost...

If you search the AVSIM hardware forum, you will see mixed results for
the quad-core. One report says negligible difference, another says
noticeable difference. It WILL run hotter than the dual-core, and may
not overclock as well.

Not an obvious buy recommendation.

Hi,

I have a P5W DH with a Q6600 overclock a 3 gig
with a FSB at 1333 mhz.

the P5W DH can run with a FSB of 1333 mhz.

My system:
P5W DH motherboard with copper pipe and heat sink,
intel quad core Q6600 overclock at 3,0 gig,
Zalman all copper heat sink with a 12 cm fan
2 gig of ram low latency,
700 watts power supply,
1 raptor hard disk 150 gig,
sound blaster X-FI sound card,
asus 8800 gtx aqua tank graphic card (stock water cool)
cm staker tower
3 8 cm intake front fan,
2 rear 8 cm rear fan + 12 cm rear out take fan
1 6 cm top out takefan,
with one 2 x 30 cm inside cylinder fan for motherboard cooling.

The P5W DH is the perfect motherboard for overclocker,
and go over the "official" spec.

I have a 3Dmark03 of 42814

FS9 run allways at 105 fps will all slider to the max and everything check,

I have Windows XP pro with SP2 and FSX SP1,
i have the core 0 allways running at 100%
and core 1,2,3,
running at 50% of power,50% of the time,
100% of power at 25% of the time,.
25 % of power running at 25% of the time.
and all core running at 100% of the time at 2X speed or more.

FSX SP1 run well for me,
My personnal FSX configuration:
display 1600 x 1200 x 32 lock at 30 fps
Water affect max 2.0 (i like the beautifull water effect)
I have a steady 30 fps at 2,000 feet and up except at big airport
i had to cut because of big airport and want a minimum between 15 to 20 fps,
ALL slider to the max and everything check except,
Light bloom: uncheck (i lost 3 to 5 fps if check)
Ground scenery shadows: uncheck, (i lost 3 to 5 fps if check)
airport vehicle reduce density to Medium,
road vehicles 10%, Ship and ferry 30%, Leisure boats 30%.
i gain 15 fps to have steady all the time 30 fps if i reduce the water
effect
to high 1X.

A quad core is harder to overclock then a dual core,
the temperature rise more and more quickly then a dual core

i stop the overclock at 3 gig until my cpu reach 60 deg C (air cool) with
all for 4 core running at 100%,
with a FSB speed at 1333 mhz and it is stable.
my stock water cool graphic card never got over 59 deg C at full speed (was
not overclock).
