Post subject: FS9 has begun crashing to desktop
Archived from groups: alt>games>microsoft>flight-sim (more info?)

Today I deleted Voz .99 and installed Voz 1.2. I installed the Northern
scenery and began flying with no problems at all. I landed and decided to
see what the area around my home airfield, KAND, looked like with Voz
installed. So I selected the 'go to airport' and chose KAND. As textures
were loading, the program crashed to desktop. I can restart from the fs9
icon and get to the opening screen. I have tried selecting a previously
saved flight with no success. I have tried to create a new flight with
default plane with no success. I am getting an error message about
FSSound.dll . . . incompatible . . . click yes or no. I have tried YES and
NO with no success.

Here are a list of things I have tried:
1. Safemode. Same failure
2. Rename FS9.cfg and delete FS9.cfg so a new file is created on startup.
Same failure
3. Deleted Voz 1.2 and go into the scenery library and delete the scenery
areas
related to Voz.
4.Rebooted computer.
5. Emptied recycle bin and temporary files in temp folder.
6. Deleted ALL saved flights with .wx and .pln flies.
7.Maybe some other stuff I can not recall at present.

Help me. I am having FS withdrawal symptoms already.
Danny

I don't remember having to delete VOZ.99 to install the later versions.
Maybe there lies the problem. Try installing VOZ.99 again maybe? There are
some answers to some CTD issues in their forums on the VOZ site.

See if this helps:

DIR:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\scenery.cfg
(DIR = The directory wherein your flight Sim is installed, e.g., C,
D, E , F , G, H, etc.

Open the scenery.cfg file (create a backup first in a separate folder
somewhere) with a text editor of choice and insure that any entries
for the removed scenery (related to Voz) have indeed been removed from
the cfg file, then save and close. In fact you can remove all scenery
entries pertaining to ADD-ON Scenery which you added in case there is
a problem with a scenery still loaded that is causing the problem,
e.g.,

[Area.038]
Title=Addon Scenery
Local=Addon Scenery
Layer=39
Active=TRUE
Required=FALSE
Remote=
[Area.040]
Title=Juliana
Local=Addon Scenery\Juliana (Name of the Add-On scenery)
Remote=
Active=TRUE
Required=FALSE
Layer=38

(NOTE: You would delete the entire [Area.038] entry to remove the
scenery info from the cfg. file)

For the FSSound.dll problem, open the DIR:\Documents and
Settings\"User Name" (the logon name under which you installed Flight
Sim)\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9\fs9.cfg
(DIR = The directory wherein your flight Sim is installed, e.g., C,
D, E , F , G, H, etc.

Open the fs9.cfg file (create a backup first in a separate folder
somewhere) with a text editor of choice and add the line FSSound.dll=1
directly underneath the [OLDMODULES] entry then save and close.

Start Flight Sim to see if that solved the problem.

As usua no guarantees of any sort are provided.
If it works it works if it doesn't then your still screwed but it was
worth a try.

I think it does say to delete 0.99, but only after removing the scenery from
the add-on scenery library within FS9 then restarting it to allow it to
generate a scenery.cfg file. If going from 1.1 to 1.2 it required keeping
the original. I presumed Danny Unvozed before deleting 0.99 and installing
1.2 as this was one of their biggest problems at first. You also MUST have
1.1 installed before installing 1.2 which he failed to mention. There is
now a 1.21 Patch available with new airports and a more fps friendly YSSY,
hey I can even turn the oil refinery back on as they have improved the
effects on fps on that too.

Danny make sure you unvoz, then reload your default textures from your cd
back into your Scenery\World\Textures folder overwriting everything to see
if that helps. I would then remove all voz folders from the add-on scenery
library, restart FS, quit it again then delete the folders from your FS
directory. If all working ok on default textures scenery etc I would
reinstall 1.1 then 1.2.

Hope this helps

I've installed the 1.21 patch, but haven't checked out YSSY yet. I wasn't
hit that severely with it before, so maybe now it will be excellent!

Thanks CL, but page 3 of the 1.1 version user's guide states in part ' to
upgrade to 1.1 from .99, you must remove .99' then offers specific
directions to accomplish that task. I am currently VOZless, having removed
v1.1 at this time.

Hi, Roy and thanks for the reply. I don't use Internet Explorer at all. I
use slim browser from Flashpeak and have for well over a year with no
problems. So can't be connected but all guesses and suggestions are
appreciated.

Ibby, I did UNVoz before I uninstalled and I did do the scenery library
thingy as suggested. I was flying with 1.1 I believe and had not yet gone
to 1.2 or the 1.21patch. I started getting the crashes after I tried to
change to an US airfield from the beautiful land of Oz. I have not tried to
reinstall the default textures and likely should do that. Aren't those
texture or scenery files just copied from the CD and pasted into the proper
directory in order to get around doing a reinstall? I don't recall if there
is a Repair feature on the original disks.

I see Shadow has offered a few config file suggestions I am going to try
first, I believe.
Thanks Ibby. I'll keep this suggestion handy too.

Shadow, the FSSound.dll suggestion worked for that error message but No joy
on the scenery.cfg modification. I opened the file and found NO Voz entries
at all. After clicking the FS9 icon, the program will load up the opening
screen where I can create or select a flight. After selecting a new flight,
the graph showing 'loading scenery' displays and completes. Then a graph
showing 'loading textures' displays. It progresses to approximately 40% to
42% at which point screen goes black and the crash message with a choice to
SEND or Don't Send. Is this an indication of a textures problem? I have
GEpro and FE installed for several weeks with no problem until now.

Danny:

Assuming that the problem lies within FS9 and not with memory ,
hardware such as overheating, or lack of free space in which to run
FS9:

Did you also check the scenery.cfg file in:
DIR:\Documents and Settings\YourName\Application
Data\Microsoft\FS9\scenery.cfg
I forgot to mention that copy previously.

Do you have or have you had any additional add-on scenery (besides the
Voz) installed?

It would appear that your default textures were overwritten and then
deleted and when FS9 attempts to load same the default textures files
aren't there.

You can:

1. Copy the textures files from your FS9 CD to you hard drive textures
folder, it is a heck of a lot easier when one knows which particular
files are missing. Otherwise it is a hit and miss proposition that you
would stumble on the right files that need to be replaced the
go-a-round. See the CD's files listing below for the location of FS9s
Files.

2. Reinstall FS9 over the top of your current install to replace the
missing textures. A good ideal would to be to copy the Add-on Scenery,
Aircraft, Gauge, effects , Modules and any AI Aircraft add-on folders
you may have installed to insure should these folders be overwritten
by a new install you can simply overwrite to replace with your already
installed items.

3. Un-Install the currently installed FS9 and install a clean copy
thereby insuring that whatever is missing is replaced. That is usually
the best as you are insured not to have missing default texture and
scenery files. You can backup Add-on Scenery, Aircraft, Gauge, Effects
, Modules and any AI Aircraft add-on folders and simply replace them
(overwrite) the newly installed folders created by the new
installation should you not wish to have to reinstall them again. You
can also backup your current FS9.cfg file.

Note: Don't forget to patch the original FS9 with FS9.1, should you
do a clean install, and of course to NoCD patch for FS9.1 thereafter
as well.

As usual no guarantees of any sort are provided.
If it works it works if it doesn't then your still screwed but it was
worth a try.

FS9 CD's Files Listing
-----------------------

This is a complete list of all the files on your FS2004 Installation
CD's. This is designed as an alternative to backing up files, and a
retrieval system for lost files.

Within the CD's are files called Cabs. These are a better form of Zip
files, so you can use any program like WinZip (not free) or WinRar to
extract the files. Or simply use Windows XPs built-in decompress
utility and extract the files to an empty folder on you hard drive.

File extensions to note:
Jpg, bmp, ico, etc… are picture wiles and can be edited EXCEPT for
aircraft models.
cfg files are configuration files, can be opened with notepad.
exe are executables.
dll files - NOT be edited.
most if not all sound files are in wav format.

CAB Files are marked with an Asterisk and has the CAB files marking

If you have any problems with FS2004, delete fs9.cfg (do a search)
this solves most basic problems.

I would bet you just have missing textures or bgls and I would copy the
whole scenery\world\texture and scenery folders and then main texture folder
back into FS9 from the cd rather than having to reinstall which can be an
absolute nightmare.
As asked already do you have any other scenery add-ons? Reason I ask is I
have MyWorld2004 landclass which is known to cause problems with the
terrain.cfg file and will cause CTD at certain places. This can be fixed by
editing certain parameters of the cfg file. Can you fly into the affected
area without a crash (no pun intended) rather than starting at same
airfield?

There is hope...

You can restore your default textures from the CDs with a utility found at
the Avsim file library under the name of texpand2.zip.

Naturally, it might be a good idea to uninstall GE and FE before running it.

Good luck.

Well Dallas, I caught you post but too late. I was able to see the
'texture' folder on disk #2 and was able to drag and drop it into the FS9
directory where it overwrote the existing files. But, no joy. Same crash at
about 42% when loading the texture folder. I eventually inserted Disk#1 and
ran the uninstall but did not complete delete the FS9 folder which contained
many add-on stuff. I then reinstall completely, making sure to place it in
the same drive partition as it originally sat. Upgraded to 9.1 . . .
crossed my fingers and started the simulator. IT WORKS! I even have FSNav
still working, FSPassengers, Squawk Box, everything works with no reinstall
of each of them. Even the add on planes, such as Cessna 421, Aeroworx Super
King Air, PMDG 737 are all there and working. Thank goodness as I was so
dreading reinstalling everything. I had previously uninstalled FE but did
not uninstall GEPro. GEPro is still working great and I reinstalled FE and
it too, is working.
Looks like I'm flyin' again. Many thanks to you and every other reader for
the posts that were made to assist with my dilemma.
Danny

I would have deleted everything out of my textures folder, both the main
textures and scenery world texture folder then copying the default files
from cd before doing a reinstall.
At least you got it working Wink
