I've recently experienced a problem where events I've assigned to
joystick buttons (flaps, landing gear, etc.) are deleted and buttons
revert back to default settings.

Any thoughts...?

I have the Saitek Cyborg Evo Force stick and don't experience any
problems with FS9 or FSX. Are you using the Siatek software or the
control options within FS to assign these buttons?
Are all your other settings remaining unchanged as FS9 would reset
everything including assigned controls if the FS9.cfg file got reset

After years of just plugging in the joystick and playing, I got
curious and installed the Saitek software (bad move) . this seems to
be when the problems began. I uninstalled the Saitek software, but
the problem persists.

Where previously I got the generic game controller calibration dialog
window, ever since software install/uninstall i still see the Saitek
window when opening game controller properties.

Ive uninstalled/reinstalled FS9..reset all my custom assignments,
problem still pops up out of nowhere...i.e. I'll fly awhile and all
of a sudden my custom flap button on the stick is no longer there. I
cant put my finger on any particular action that causes it.

Keyboard assignments which Ive customized remain unchanged. this
affects joystick only

Can I ever get back where i was before?

Hi intangible,

It sounds as though you haven't got rid of all traces of the Saitek
software during your installs/uninstalls.

Try using Regedit ( regedit.exe, in your Windows folder in Windows
Explorer) - fire it up, select Find from the menu bar, enter Saitek as your
search string, and hit F3 to find the first entry, delete it, hit F3 again,
delete it, and so on).
