Archived from groups: alt>games>microsoft>flight-sim (more info?)

My system:
MB - AsRock 939Dual-SATA
CPU - Athlon64 3200
OS - XP Pro SP1
Graphics - Radeon 9500 (128Mb)
Graphics Driver - Omega drivers based on ATi Catalyst 6.8
Memory - 1Gb Crucial
Bios - AMI 8.12

My problem:
When I try to run MS Flight Sim 2004 the programme builds the database for
scenery and hangs at the "Century of Flight" splash screen - I have to
ctrl-Alt-Del my way out of it.

This same software ran fine (and still does, as I can't run it on the new
machine) on my old system which has an Abit KG-7 RAID mobo, Radeon 9600
(128Mb) graphics and only 512 Mb memory.

FRAPS is reporting 50+ fps in Flight Gear and a steady 60fps in X-Plane, so
it seems to be just FS2004 that's not up for it.

I'm stumped, has anyone any ideas? Or suggestions where I might better ask
this question?

Regards,
Terry

You might try to run FS9 in Safe mode. Click Start>All Programs>Microsoft
Games>Flight Simulator> You should see 'start safe mode' as well as 'reset
defaults'. If the safe mode yields no success you might try to reset
defaults which, I believe, is similar to deleting the FS9.cfg file and
letting FS9 recreate that file. I'm guessing it isn't your equipment just a
glitch in the config file.

There's almost no chance it's a hardware problem.

If the resetting the defaults doesn't work, I'd move on to considering file
corruption as the culprit. It's loading the program into memory and it's
reaching something it doesn't like and it jumps off the tracks.

Consider uninstalling, running a disk defragmenter and reinstalling.

There's also the slight chance that it doesn't get along with your graphics
driver.

Hi Danny,

Safe mode and reset defaults both hang at the splash screen, same as the
main exe. Worth a try though. Thanks

Hi Dallas,

Will try the uninstall, de-frag, re-install thing. Not likely to be the
graphics driver, I don't think, it was running with th same card and driver
on the old rig, after all.

Thanks,

Terry

Hi Dave,

I think I've re-installed Direct X 9.0c at least twice, but could try it
again after the defrag.

Thanks Terry

Not sure if this is your problem, but my FS9 wouldn't open after
installing a beta version of IE. Deleted one of files that IE installs
by direction of some post I found on line, and problem solved.

Hi Dallas,

I'd like to report than Un-install, defrag, re-install did the trick. I'd
*like* to, but I can't!

No change.

My C: drive did need a bunch of defrag though.

Thanks anyway.

Hi Dave,

I keep as far away from IE as possible, I run Firefox, and used XP-lite to
remove IE (and media Player) from my system. So I doubt that's my problem.

Thanks anyway.

I'm a Firefox user also, but because there are a few things that I need
IE for, I foolishly downloaded their Beta update. I've since removed it. Smile

If resetting to 'default' did not work, you might try to delete the FS9.cfg
file altogether and let FS9 rebuild the file. That's my only other
suggestion. It is located in the Documents and Settings folder on the C
drive. If you need help finding it, advise here.

Ugh... and the safe mode thing didn't work either?

I'm out of ideas for the moment, but I'll keep thinking.
