Hello,
I went out hunting with my 25 lvl Priest. Accompanying me was a level
62 character. The goal was to help me level up. My status bar was
blue (200% xp)
So we went to beat up on some 40th creatures in a group. Most of my
attacks were resisted but once in a while, I would do a point of
damage.
When the creature was killed, I would get 8 xp. That is it. There
were two of us and granted the other guy did most of the killing, but
why did I only get 8 xp?
I went out on my own and killed some skeletons that were level 23 - I
got 278 xp per kill.
I did go out orc hunting with a group of 5 other people - all about
the same level - everytime a level 22 orc was killed, I would get
about 150xp - and there were 5 of us.
How does getting xp work in Wow? I am trying to level up - what is
the best way - with a group or solo? An if in a group - should I be
hanging with people my own level or close to?
Thanks,
Tmuld. >> Stay informed about: Experience Points with higher level characters? |

Best way to level - questing while having rested bonus.
Solo is (generally) better than group except in the cases where group
is more efficient (AKA - *not* gathering quests)
Having someone *much* higher than you help you is inefficient except
in cases where you don't care about XP from mobs and, again, just want
quest XP.
Quest XP is always the same (whether the quest is red or green) EXCEPT
when it's gray. Try to do more green quests on your own, save orange/
red quests for group/high level friends. >> Stay informed about: Experience Points with higher level characters? |

I don't know if this is entirely true. I know for sure you get full XP
even when the quest is red, but I turned in a lower level green quest
and did not get the full XP that was listed on wowhead. >> Stay informed about: Experience Points with higher level characters? |

I'm just going by what was said on the forums by a blue. Most people
thought "Red = Much less XP because you shouldn't really be able to do
this so you must've had help." And green was less becuase, "It's too
easy."
But, according to the blue (I forget which), you get the same XP all
the way through until the quest is gray. >> Stay informed about: Experience Points with higher level characters? |

The subject was discussed ad infinitum in a thread 5 days ago, Ginding Solo
vs in a Group.
Someone posted a WowWiki link http://www.wowwiki.com/Formulas:Mob_XP
Scroll down to Two Character Groups and you will find "In a group of two
characters, the total experience awarded for the mob is calculated using the
solo XP formula and the level of the higher character. The experience is
always divided between the two characters in the same ratio, regardless of
how much damage was caused by each."
Since your friend was attacking mobs that gave him no exp, I'm not even sure
how you got the 8 exp per mob that you did!
But, for the sake of argument, let's say your friend was killing mobs that,
solo, would have given him 150 exp. (Level 57 mobs).
WowWiki gives a formula for the ratio of the exp split in a two party group.
Say MXP is the amount of experience your friend would have gained if he solo
killed that mob.
CL1 = Character 1 Level, assumed to be the higher level character
CL2 = Character 2 Level
MXP = Solo Mob Experience, as calculated above for CL1
XP1 = MXP * CL1 / (CL1 + CL2), the experience awarded to character 1
XP2 = MXP * CL2 / (CL1 + CL2), the experience awarded to character 2
You were level 25, you friend 62. In this example, your friend kills level
56 mobs for around 350 exp. He would retain roughly 250 exp. 350 * 62,
divided by 87.
Your experience is 100.
To summarize; for exp gain in a group the mob must yield exp to the highest
group member. The exp yielded will be split among the group members
proportionally to LEVEL (not damage!). >> Stay informed about: Experience Points with higher level characters? |

I've noticed that if the quest is at the very bottom of the green range
(i.e. if you leveled up once it would go gray), you can get less exp.

Two reasons:
1) If someone else does most of the damage, you get less XP
2) If the mob is outside your own level range (too high or too low for
you), you get less XP
If you want your level 60 to help you, don't go grinding anything higher
than level 28 or so.

NOT true.
Who does what damage has NO EFFECT on exp gain in a group.
(Can you imagine if healers got less exp than, say, rogues, because the
rogue is a dps class? Or if the tank got less exp than the mage?
If you THINK about what you just said, you would know it to be false)

Well, this time you are half-right. The exp you earn is related to the
difference between your level and the mob. Killing lower level things nets
you less exp.
There is no such thing as a mob too high to yeild exp to you (unless it
kills you).
>

The most inaccurate statement of all.
Exp in a group is determined by the level of the highest member. If the high
level would not get exp in a solo kill of the mob, THERE IS NO EXP TO BE
SHARED. If your 60 and you want to help a level 25 friend, grab a couple
extra 60's (enough to keep the lowbie alive) and kill mobs that give you
exps.
Better yet, buff your friend for grinding and log in an alt that is his
level. >> Stay informed about: Experience Points with higher level characters? |

And despite what some people say, you do get some
experience for gray quests. Not a lot though, but
I was surprised.
I've dinged up plenty of times turning in green
quests. I know that in the barrens, with lots of
resting bonuses, the quests turn green much faster
than I could turn them in.

For a priest of your level, make friends with a mage of roughly the same
level (+/-5 levels). Grind (i.e. kill over and over), mobs of roughly your
level, maybe a bit lower. Mages have powerful area of effect spells (AOE),
and can kill multiple mobs at once, it's a bit risky and slow for them to
try it solo, but with a priest standing back and healing them becomes much
easier. You also get a 'shield' spell, which can be cast on a party member
which will absorb some damage, not sure what level you get this at though,
my only priest is level 10
The mage will be able to summon magical food and water to help both your
mana and health recharge.
Don't try this on groups of mobs with either ranged weapons or magic
attacks, it hurts, I know I tried it

I stand by my post.
Damage had NOTHING to do with the OP getting so little xp per kill. As he
stated, HE WAS IN A GROUP.
He questioned why he got so little exp WHILE IN A GROUP. He was given the
wrong information in response to that question. >> Stay informed about: Experience Points with higher level characters? |
