Wouldn't mind trying it but... Impossible to access their website for
most of Sunday. Eventually managed it in the late afternoon, downloaded
the client and filled in my email details for a trial key... which has
not been sent. Thought I'd check their website to try again and it's
unaccessible again ! Doesn't exactly inspire confidence !

Well I joined in March last year, and I haven't bought a new game since
(except for Civ 4 to use on my laptop when I can't get online). Saved me
a huge amount of money just on that basis. Excellent game IMHO (and
opinion is all anyone can ever give) and it has won various awards
recently. Single instance, no shards, over 100,000 active users and
often over 22,000 concurrently. The website was OK this evening - but
they are adding lots of new servers tomorrow, so it will be down for 24
hours. Give it a try if you can.

Ditto for me. When I checked a few months ago they were doing a "big"
upgrade then as well. Everything was down for 24 hours. Do they rebate
time or money when it's down for extended periods of time?

What does this mean exactly? Is the game run on one server and
everyone can "see" everyone else? Does it matter if I'm at the other
end of the galaxy? If it is one server... doesn't sound to reliable to
me.

24 hours again... hmmm. Adding servers for the website or the game
itself?

Btw, I was on eBay around that time and people were selling the fake
Eve game money for *real money,* what's up with that?

TIA

It means that everyone is in the same universe at once. I can't "see"
you if you are at the other end of the galaxy, though we can have a
conversation, assuming that we are both online at the same time. If I
navigate to the system where you are and fly to your location then I can
see and indeed fight you. You can chat with all your mates who are on
line, wherever they may be in the universe. In games where there are
different "shards" (copies of the game universe), if we happen to be
signed up in different shards, then we will never meet - parallel
universes in effect. And it is not one server, it's a bank of them, like
any professional on-line system. It is reliable enough for me - it is
very, very rare that it is down, outside the standard one-hour
maintenance each day.

For the game - the server farm needs more power to cope with more
players. But the website is linked to the game, and it will be down
today as well I think.

I give you 10 dollars, your character in the game gives my character 100
million ISK (game currency). There are big arguments about whether this
is legitimate or not, at present I think it is banned but it still
happens of course.

I'm not sure as to what you mean. Feel free to elaborate as I seldom
post on NGs and am unaware of a problem I could be the cause of ! (I've
changed the "dummy" email address if that was it ?)

Ah, now I get it. Thanks. I suspect some people use it more as a chat
room than a space/combat game? Smile

Does that hour start at midnight Iceland time?

I understand other games suffer from this as well. I've heard it done
with Everquest too.

Hmm... I'm so bored with all the other online (free server) games. I
just finished Max Payne2, twice. (What a Great game.) Eve looks
intriguing.

Their character types seem somewhat restrictive, but I guess all games
have some weird aspect. It kind of reminds me of Morrowind with a
spaceship. Smile Thanks again for the info.

Slight overkill !

Extract from Eve Online support;

"The EVE server require certain maintenance in order to function
properly, this is the result of CCP's attempt to create one large server
for everyone to play on. The goal is to have 20.000 players playing the
game on one server.
The downtime is from 11:00 to 12:00 GMT every day, usually the downtime
is shorter on the weekends.
Training continues during downtime and so do agent missions, so make
sure that you can finish your agent mission before downtime."

Still can't get the 14 days trial pass Sad

There's that one server deal again. I live in the American southwest,
I wonder what a dogfight would be like when Sven has a ping of 7 and I
have 200... not pretty I'm sure.

I think I'll keep my money and not be aggravated by spotty service and
weird rules. I can play UT, RtoWC, and Half-Life Team-Fortress any
time I want for free. (Even though I do despise Steam.)

I hate to be one of those people trolling for these types of things, but
I'd really like to try EVE myself, and have had zero luck getting the trial
key server to send me anything. I'm a little loathe to drop money on the
boxed version, and while I could spend FilePlanet Hitpoints on it, they
want more points for the EVE client than nearly any other game (which is
ridiculous for a $20 box).

So, all this was a long-winded way of asking whether anyone can drop me a
buddy pass. Smile

My mail server uses same kind of spam filter. It's good but sometimes
filters not only spam and my code to Eve was filtered.

It will have a small effect - if your ping is high then it will take
longer for you to discover when something has happened in a fight (eg
one of your opponents blowing up) and also longer for your new
instructions (fire at new target) to reach the server. It's not a big
effect, and certainly not enough to cause problems, but it is one reason
why, living at the end of a narrow pipe, I prefer long range to short
range weapons. Close range fights happen faster and you have to give
more orders per minute than in long range fights.
And of course this is not caused by the fact that Eve has only one
(logical) server. Most of the difference in latency these days is
decided close to the subscriber - so someone with a good broadband
connection in the USA or Australia will have a better ping than someone
on a 56k line in London (where the servers are). So having
geographically segregated shards as some other games do would not make a
lot of difference.
