After almost two thousands words of technical discussion, the bottom
line is that it's clear that Rockstar had some issues matching the basic
performance of the Xbox 360 game on the PS3 hardware. Lower resolution,
zero anti-aliasing support and a more variable frame-rate are the bottom
line.
On the one hand, it's a touch disappointing that Rockstar's USD 100
million budget couldn't extend to optimising the experience to match
Xbox 360, especially when you look at a game like Burnout Paradise that
doesn't require a mandatory installation, has a basically rock solid
frame-rate, and is technically identical cross-platform.

Since your trolling the Playstation newsgroups with this I will add my
say to the matter.
Eurogamer is one of the only site to say the 360 version is better and
smoother framerates, while most of the other sites say the PS3 version
shines.
I brought the 360 version of GTA and first thought it was the better
version, but after playing my sons PS3 version I have to say it runs
smoother, no poppins and the processing effects are way above the 360's
version.
Eurogamer has always been very biased towards the 360. The reviewer on
this site how wrote the stuff you posted also said, the PS3 version
looks better but prefers it on the 360, enough said. >> Stay informed about: Eurogamer: 360 > PS3 GTA4 |

Really. And at least the PS3 version got a patch. Sad thing though is early
reports say it doesn't fix everything that is broken. This game was not
ready for mass production on either system but I guess they thought it was
good enough to cash in on. It's things like this that can ruin a franchise. >> Stay informed about: Eurogamer: 360 > PS3 GTA4 |

I own neither a 360 or a PS3. However I have seen the comparison vids on
gametrailers and the PS3 certainly has small issues. Take a look and
you'll see how on the PS3 when in the helicopter a whole building
disappears. That said they both look fairly identical for the most part. >> Stay informed about: Eurogamer: 360 > PS3 GTA4 |

LOL!
As a person that owns both consoles, both versions of GTA IV, completed the
360 version, still working on the PS3 version, without question there is
more pop up on the 360 version. I have seen whole buildings appear right in
front of me on the 360 version while driving a car. GTA IV isn't about
graphics, thank god because it is just average looking and both have frame
rate issues, pop up and various other graphical problems, it's about depth
of gameplay.
This game, like many others, could have used another 6 months to a year of
polish. >> Stay informed about: Eurogamer: 360 > PS3 GTA4 |

And you know, the game would have still been a huge hit even if it were
released a year from now. It's about console and peripheral sales Boody, and
the 360 is starting to lag in that area. I'm not saying that MS pressed for
it to get released because of that, but they did have a time schedule for
the DLC late this summer for that extra $50mil, so the sales part seems
corollary to it.. >> Stay informed about: Eurogamer: 360 > PS3 GTA4 |

I haven't seen that at all...
The GT comparison video here:
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/33470.html
Shows the two games looking mostly identical, particularly the cut
scenes. There are some odd exceptions, like the guy examining the
diamond or the bit with the pin-up calendar which look fuzzy and
blurry on the PS3. The popup happens on the PS3 version as well (the
video shows the Getalife building popping in and out even though it's
clearly within the draw distance.)
The Kotaku link lays it out point by point saying the 360 version is
better, then says at the bottom that they'd still choose the PS3
version.
http://kotaku.com/384422/which-version-of-gta-iv-should-you-buy-we-com...e-the-p
Installation - Winner - 360
"The PlayStation 3 version has a mandatory 3.4 GB hard drive
installation that will be the longest 7 minutes and 20 seconds of your
life if you're chomping at the bit to play."
Frame Rate - Winner - 360
"The Xbox 360 version seemed capable of achieving a smoother frame
rate, peaking higher in certain circumstances, such as in confined
spaces or during light traffic"
Pop-In & Loading - Tie - But what was the point of the HD install on
the PS3?
"The Xbox 360 version can suffer from some very noticeable texture
loading, as things like trees, vehicles and building signs will
regularly pop-in as one tools about town. It can be distracting,
especially during high speed chases, and the PS3 version isn't
entirely immune from it."
Graphics - Winner - 360
"Initially, it appeared that the PS3 suffered from more noticeable
aliasing than its 360 counterpart, but after eyeballing the final
retail copy, they appear to be on par. I noticed that the paint filter
applied to cover some of the game's imperfections appeared a tiny bit
muddier on the PS3 version, with night time scenes seeing more
streakiness."
Downloadable Content - Winner - 360
"If you're looking for more GTA IV, and you may very well be after
you've completed the core game, you're going to want the 360 version."
Achievements - Winner - 360
"The Xbox 360 version has the requisite list of Achievements exclusive
to the platform, creative and challenging goals that sometimes go
beyond the regular gaming experience."
Motion Controls - LOSER - PS3
"You'll probably leave it off, just like I did."
Good Vibrations - Winner - 360 (PS3 requires purchase of a new $55
controller)
"GTA IV supports vibration in the Xbox 360 controller and the
DualShock 3, so PS3 owners won't be left in the force feedback lurch."
But then they wrap it up...
"If this were a personal decision, I'd have chosen the PlayStation 3
edition"

One of the first reviews of the game (not from Eurogamer but I don't
remember which site off the top of my head) stated that while the
frame rates were nearly identical, the Xbox 360 had the edge, most
notably in the indoor environments (as few as there are).
I have yet to read a major gaming website's review that says the PS3's
frame rate was better although I'll also note that I haven't read tons
of reviews of the game since they all seem to say the same thing after
a little while.

I'll see for myself soon enough. I have to return my PS3 rental soon
but I'll be buying the 360 version in short time.

Perhaps it would have been better if the game was released in a few
months since then the episodes would have had much more of an impact
being released around the same time... >> Stay informed about: Eurogamer: 360 > PS3 GTA4 |

I know companies need to make money, but they could hold off. I don't know
how better the graphics could have been made considering the scope of the
game, but the popins and framerate could have been worked on more. I wish
game makers would end having games made that don't need a HDD, or at least
make a game where it can be with or without an HDD. I wonder how good GTAIV
would have looked had it cached to the HDD on the 360. >> Stay informed about: Eurogamer: 360 > PS3 GTA4 |
