Error in Super Mario Galaxy? (possible spoilers)

Bit of spoiler space just in case.














































So, I'm about 54 stars in, just doing the desert planet. I'm showing as
3 stars collected, 1 remaining.

It's listed as:

star, star, not collected
star

Now, I have done the not collected level, it's the sun-baked castle
level. I've done it twice but it's not showing up that I have collected
the star, the in-level star is now clear to show it's been picked up.

Any ideas?

That means you found the hidden star first, I've done that a few
times.

You know the (first) tower which goes up or down when you stomp on the
buttons? You must be using that star on top of it when the tower is
"up", you need to use it when it's all the way down instead, that'll
send you to a different area which leads to the normal star for that
level.
