Which engines normally get started first in a commercial airliner?
I always thought it was the left engine, but after watching activities at
YMML the other day when my dad was leaving, I noticed it was the right
engine that was started first on at least 2 767's I saw push back.

On our trip this past July, all four planes we were on started the Number 1
or left engine first. 2 A319's, 1 A320 and 1 B752.

I'm old enough to remember a little guy with a red fire extinguisher on a
cart standing under each engine as they started them.
Now where did I put my walker?

hehehe...I remember turning the props on the R-3350's
through 3, or was it 5 blades, before signaling the
FE to engage the starter, on the days I wasn't flying
The days I flew, it was 'dip a rag in AVGAS' and wipe the
engines amd flaps undersides down to remove the oil after
we returned from a mission...

If you recall the movie clip we were given a few weeks ago, showing the
startup, takeoff and landing of a 767 from the cockpit, you may
remember the captain advising the F.O. which engine he was going to
start first (I believe it was the left one).
This would lead me to believe it is the captain's decision based on
some factor which I don't know. There's probably a technical reason
for his choice, but to my knowledge, it's still 50/50.
Geez, and I didn't want to do any thinking today *sigh*

IIRC, it depends on the engine that powers the primary generator and
hydraulic pumps. Of course, since all of my experience as a pilot is
NOT in heavy iron, I am going primarily by what I have read and remember.

I always thought left engines were last to start. On a 747 documentary I
have engine nr. 4 is started first (far right)

Unless there's a specific design that necessitates a certain engine be
started first (ie, the APU bleed only goes to the #2 engine), I think
the start order is really up to pilot preference or a well played game
of "eeny-meeny".
Of course, there are positional considerations, too. It would be less
noisy and more courteous to ground crew to start the #2 (center) engine
on a DC-10/MD-11/L1011 than either of the wing engines while under pushback.

Hmmm, and I was always told in a 747 it was 1.3.2.4.
