First question. I am currently doing Engineering & Mining. Is it true I
can drop the Mining & take up Enchanting?

Second question. To level up, I plan on dis-enchanting blues in that I will
get when my wife & I burn through low level instances. Is this a viable
method to level up a chanter?

All I want is to be able to DE blues that no one can use when I am on
runs/raids. All too often there is no chanter attending & both my wife & I
really need the materials.

A skill level 1 enchanter can disenchant anything, that'll take you to
59 but it doesn't even matter if all you want is to disenchant. It's a
good profession actually!

One of the benefits of a tradeskill/gathering profession is that once
every 3-6 months I will drop my gathering profession (herbalism) and DE
every piece of loot I no longer use in the past 6 months. Then pick up
gathering again. Rinse and repeat Smile

Yes. Click the skill on your character panel and there will be a small
button to click to unlearn the skill.

Don't you get sick of re-levelling herbalism over and over again? All
that Peacebloom must be driving you insane Smile

I have an alt who is an enchanter and it is a money pit.

I started twinking him with my main and the mail system to get him cash
and items to DE.

I then wizzed through the first 50-75 skill points by repeatedly
enchanting the same bracer, cloak, chest etc for low level minor
enchants, good way to skill up. Then i simply bought as much dusts and
mats as i could to get the training and skill level up.

I now have a lvl 20 night elf hunter with mining, enchanting and my
main continues with mining and skinning. This way i can send my alt
ore, bars, leather/skins, greens/blues for DE or if i get a new item
from AH or drop thats not BOP then i send it to him for enchant with
minor striking etc..he then gets the skill points and a steady stream
of cash to buy mats or i can farm goldshire/westfall for ore and can
then buy the recipes for enchants.

I havent started selling enchants yet and offer free enchants for those
with mats. i get the skill points.

Seems to work so far..but needs money.

I disagree with that assessment. Enchanting is expensive and tedious to
level.

It's a good gathering profession, a bad crafting one. I've got it on both
my mage and priest: my mage is trying to level it and is constantly broke,
my priest is just disenchanting everything and has no money troubles, as I
sell most dusts and essences, while keeping a reasonable stock so I already
have materials whenever I want any of my gear enchanted.

It's true, but it's an expensive combination - you'll need to buy all
your engineering materials, and enchanting itself is a money pit until
the high levels.

Just to gently point out, however: there's no such thing as a blue
"that no-one else can use", in that sense - you may be able to (and
want to) DE it for materials, but everyone else can AH it for hard
cash towards (say) their epic mount. So if you mean that you hope to
roll need whenever such things come up (or at least when no-one else
does so), or have some kind of priority option on an "unwanted" blue
over and above people who'd "just" sell it, expect to be very
unpopular, very disappointed or both. I've been on guild runs and
regular raids where it was the norm for the enchanters to be allowed
to DE stuff that no-one could use directly, but they were very much
the exception - and it was also very much on an understanding that by
skilling up the enchanter we were skilling up a guild/raid resource.

Cheers - Ian

I have an alt that is an enchanter. What enchanting is good for is
disenchanting greens and above. My main sends all the green and blue drops
(that aren't otherwise valuable at the AH) to disenchant. My alt makes a
lot of gold selling the dust that is generated from the disenchants. As for
leveling, it's not necessary, enchanters can disenchant at a very low skill
level.

Just to gently reply... BOPs... blues "that no one else can use".

BOEs are usually greeded. Of course I can DE the items that my wife &
myself win. =)

Many times there is no Chanter in the group & stuff gets rolled on & sold to
vendors. Sometimes people that win the roll prefer to just sell it rather
than DE, depending on the shard prices. Another example, for the Boss's
loot on 45 min Barons, unless the item is "needed" everyone usually agrees
to pass to a Chanter (if there is one present) & then everyone can roll for
the mat'ls at the end of the run.

We recently did a server transfer & I am quite surprised to find shards
selling much higher. Had I only known...

I meant *dis*-enchanting as a profession. Enchanting mats dont require
a deposit at the AH and you'll find that with all the extra mats you'll
go and get your gear enchanted more frequently too.

It is a bit tedious at first. But once you 135+ you're golden. Hitting
135 is not hard since everything raises skill at that stage.

Once at 135, I only hit the profitable / useful herbs. Kingsblood,
Liferoot, Gravemoss, Goldthorn, Wildbloom, Firebloom, Dreamfoil,
Silversage, so forth.

I would have farmed these herbs anyway so its less tedious. I still
don't drop the skill very often Smile

Of course. You can always drop skills. Should you ever change your mind
though, you will be starting completely from scratch.

Not really, no. And I would note that you shouldn't even try to level up
enchanting unless you have a rich benefactor. It's a very expensive skill
to level up, with almost no opportunity to make it back if you use up your
DE proceeds to level up. Until you get to about 275, you will find that you
rarely if ever make a penny from enchanting.

What you should be doing is disenchanting only, and selling everything.
Then when you've got loads of cash you can think about leveling it - expect
to throw away hundreds of gold pieces in cash or 'sacrificed' drops if you
do so.

You can disenchant anything, at any level, with just 1 point in enchanting. *
