Post subject: Enchanting from the beginning -- noticing green drops
Archived from groups: alt>games>warcraft (more info?)

Over the weekend I started three Horde characters on Rexxar: a troll
hunter, an undead rogue, and a tauren druid. Since I enjoy playing hunters,
I'm leveling her the first and fastest, and made her a miner/herbalist.
(Yeah, yeah, I know I have to keep switching the tracker, but hunters switch
the trackers constantly, anyway so that's never bothered me. And I needed
gathering professions for the gold.)

I had really bad luck with bag drops (none at all in the starting zone) and
finally trekked my way to Orgrimmar (-- does that city *ever* get easier to
navigate??? I hate it. The Undercity is a little confusing at first, as is
Thunder Bluff with all those levels and ramps, but Orgrimmar is, by far, my
Least Favorite Horde City) and bought 3 little pouches @ 2s each from the
AH.

*Anyway*... I busily quested and gathered copper, peacebloom, silverleaf,
and earthroot, sold stacks of copper on the AH so that I had, already,
enough to send each of the other alts a gold and the same small bags. Smile

My tauren is an enchanter. At L5 she's already up to 8-10 skill points (or
thereabouts) from DEing the greens that dropped for my hunter (who is now a
L14) in The Barrens. I swear, when I was killing plainstriders I got 4
greens in a row.

So -- this is for Josephus -- I think you must have gotten plenty of low
level greens when you were first starting out, and just didn't realize what
you could do with them. There is no way (I'm not calling you a liar --
unless, of course, you're trolling -- but I'm calling you unobservant)
you've never had a green item drop. No one is *that* unlucky. Go back to
Westfall and kill Defias. You'll get greens that you can DE with 1 skill
point. You won't get xp, but you'll be able to skill up your enchanting a
little.

Horde got bent over a park bench when it comes to the starting zones.
I think all cities are confusing until you spend enough time in them
to know where stuff is. My most hated city so far has been
Ironforge. Talk to a guard to ask where a trainer or something is,
and you get the little flag on your minimap, but then you have to
enter 2 or 3 houses that seem to twist around each other before you
find the one with the NPC you were looking for.

Green drops in horde starting zones are a bit spread thin too.
Mulgore seems to have the best drop rate for greens. But Tirisfal and
Durotar are very lacking. Also, unlike some alliance vendor NPC's, I
don't know of any horde vendors that sell green items.

TBC made up for some of the inadequacies of horde starting zones.
Eversong is my favorite starting zone in the game. I've been taking
more of my alts through there. Running a tauren shaman from Mulgore
to Eversong is an epic trip, but well worth it, as I really hate the
Mulgore quests. Ghostlands is also 1000 times better then Barrens for
leveling, and the town rep there gives you access to some really nice
low level items.

Some of the quests do grant rep with Silvermoon, basically any quest
you start outside of Tranquellien. I don't think Tranquellien rep
gains count towards anything else though. That leaves the 2nd major
quest hub of the zone, east of Tranquellien, as a good place to grab
some horde rep.

Personally, I thought getting about a dozen green drops in the little while
I played ( some greens were improvements over the gear I had, naturally, and
I used them rather than send them to be DEed ) was a pretty good drop rate.

Interestingly I've always found IF fine, but then it was the first city I
really got to know, even though my first characters were human. Worst for
me is UC, I always forget what corner I'm in or need to go to.

Not horde-specific but the goblin wandering between Ratchet and Crossroads
has green swords occasionally - I made much use of him when I did the
levelling contest on an empty test server a couple of years back as it was
the only way to get even half decent weapons for my lowbie rogues.

Agreed, although I will say there's one downside to Ghostlands, in that you
don't get horde rep from those quests (I think), so start a little behind
repwise. Not that it really matters, since rep is faster now anyway, but my
draenei priest was exalted with 3 alliance factions and not far off with
the other 2 when she hit 60... my belf warlock isn't even close to exalted
with any of the horde factions. Sure, I started neutral instead of friendly
with 3, but it's more than 3k that I'm down compared to the draenei.

then you're doing it wrong. My Blood Elf mage was exalted with both
Orgrimmar and Undercity by 60.
