After watching the opening movie that ran through the basic character
types and realms, I got a dialog box presented to me that said something
along the lines of "As this is your first time playing we recommend you
start on Albion on such and such server as that is where most other new
players are at the moment". So that's what I did.
I did read all the stuff carefully, trouble is I've got a memory like a
sieve at the best of times, let alone when I'm tired I looked back
in the journal, but it didn't seem to contain all the information I had
been given, but I may have just missed something obvious.

Got the trial from Fileplanet, it just had a registration key, didn't
mention anything about cancelling. Couldn't see any mention of
cancellation on all the stuff you had to agree to when signing up
either.
As of last night I'd not had any email or anything from Mythic. I
thought they might send one with cancellation details or whatever.

Can't remember my character name, did I mention I had a memory like a
sieve It was just a random one. What with a wife and daughter both
obsessed with the Sims, I have to snatch computer time when I can. It's
usually later in the evening, after 10.30 for an hour or two, depending
how knackered I am.
Just got the Barbarian Invasion expansion for Rome: Total War, so I've
got to try and make time for that too. What with Civ 4 due next month
too, maybe it's not the time to be starting DAoC Still, if it's only
£8 a month, it's not too bad for just dipping in and out of two or three
times a week.

Up until the frustrations with the mouse (afterwards I found an option

getting some armour if I completed a few basic quests.

Definitely remember seeing the Healer and the Trainer, didn't occur to

Thanks guys, when I know I'm going to get a chance to play I'll post

LOL, seems like the consesus is Albion is not the place to be. Seeing as
I haven't got too far, I may just start again.
What's a good class and realm to learn with?

Well, for learning, Albion probably is the place to be. They kind of seem
to be the favored child of the developers. Probably because that is
where most people play. As for which realm is the best, it all depends on
who you ask. People tend to like the realm they started in. For me that
is midgard. I mainly play a troll warrior. A lot of people tend to play
human characters but I play one of those in real life. >> Stay informed about: How Easy For A Newbie? |

OK, done that, gone to the trainer and learnt about combat, went and
killed the skeleton, then he tells me to go back to Master Frederick and
tell him I've learned much when he asks me a question.
He asks me if everything is all right, but how do I tell him I've learnt
much? I typed /learned much, but nothing happens.

Take a look at the tabs at the top of your Chat Window. Make sure the
Main Tab is selected. Then you can type in the /say channel by default.
Simply hit <enter> I have learned much <enter>. You do not need the /
except to specify different chat channels from the one that is tab selected.
So, if you want to speak to your group type /g Hail and well met
<enter>. That will go only to your group members. /gu Salutations,
Guildmates <enter> will go to your guild. There is a default starting
guild that all new players are a member of, the <Clan Cotswald>, you can
learn from many of those in the guild as well.
There is also a /broadcast (/br for short) that will basically shout to
all those in the zone, but it only works in very specific areas, such as
Camelot City proper.
That might help you a bit as well.

I agree totally. I just suggested it because than rather than become
fustrated and perhaps giving in, killing mobs to level and doing the
/tasks gets you to 5 pretty quickly too. Best to do the newbie quests
though as you say.

It's because MMORPGs evolved from textual MUDs. The first generation
MMORPGs like DAoC and EQ were based on MUDs. You don't really have to
type too much in DAoC though, as you can usually click on the
highlighted word(s).

Mmm. The link I quoted was direct from Mythic I think. Still FP
should, and usally do, state if you have to cancel before the trial is
up.

If you are in any doubts email Mythic's suport. I usually get
responses from them within 48 hours.

Personally I think MMORPGs are great value for money considering then
entertainment you get from them and comparing the price to other
leisure activites, cinema tickets etc.

You can change the keyboard to suit also by using the keyboard button
on the command panel. Best leave it whilst you are learning the game
though.

Hey, it took me a long time to learn these things! <grins>
Besides, /face and /stick are preconfigure keys now, e = stick and f =
face, he will see them when he uses /keyboard.
As for the others...well, perhaps I did go a wee bit fast.

ModernCelt is right. There is no better realm. It's personal
preference really. Most folks do start with Albion however. Ithink
it's partly to do with the King Arthur thing. Also as has been said
Albion was the realm developed first and was given the most love in
the early days.
I wanted to start Hib, but I hated the candyland look of the old DAoC
graphics. This has changed now though. Also initially I found Midgard
too dark and dreary so I played Alb. When the other realms started to
get more attention from Mythic I switched. I love the Midgard
landscape now with the snow and the weather, It's great when it snows.
You can almost feel the chill air when you play. Midgard has some
great zones too. I also love the Celtic lore of Hibernia and the new
graphics are far less garish than they used to be.
As to class, again there is no best class. I would suggest though that
you start with a straight forward class as this is your first MMORPG.
If you fancy melee fighting pick a tank class. If you want to be a
finger waggler chose a straight forward caster class like a Wiz,
Eldritch or Runemaster. These are basically nuke classes and easier to
get a handle on to start with. As you get more familar with the game
start up some hybrids, pet classes, stealthers etc. and see how they
fit with you. Most folks end up with a variety. I would not play a
support class at first though Cleric/Healer/Druid etc. It's hard work
and folks do tend to get narky even though you are a newbie. A good
healer takes a certain type of person, but if you are a good healer
you will be adored by all.
Basically I'd suggest the following to get you started.
Melee
Albion - Armsman or Mercenary.
Midgard - Warrior or Beserker.
Hibernia - Hero or Blademaster.
Casters
Albion - Wizard.
Midgard - Runemaster.
Hibernia - Eldritch.

I'm with you here. I usally never play humans in RPGs. As you say I is
one in the RL and I want a bit of escapism.

Handy to know. I never ask them now as I gave up. I've not really
found much need now too with the maps and better journal entries. If I
do get stuck on the odd really frustrating quest I cheat and go to
Alakazam or IGN and get a /loc. Keeps me sane(ish).

I have been playing this game for over 3 years and I didn't know how to do
that. >> Stay informed about: How Easy For A Newbie? |
