I've argued this point a dozen times over the years. Many people
contend (as does Wikipedia) that the leading selling features of the
PS2 was backwards compatibility and DVD playback. But since DVD players
had fallen to the $100 mark by Christmas 2000, and only PS1 owners had
a vested interest in backwards compatibility, it didn't make much sense
to buy a PS2 just for those reasons. Still, all I have to back up my
arguments is my own logic.

So I'm asking everybody out there to participate in my little
unscientific poll here. Either respond here or send me an e-mail
listing which of the following reasons (listed below) influenced your
PS2 purchase, and how important were they. Rate the reasons by
percentage points - for example, if DVD playback was the ONLY reason
you bought a PS2, that reason would rate 100%. Feel free to add nay
other reasons to my list as you see fit. I will gather your responses
for the next week or two, then post my results online. (Those of you
that choose to e-mail me instead of responding publicly, rest assured I
will NOT post your addresses or identities when I post the final
results.)

---------- begin poll here ----------

What reasons influenced your decision to get a PS2?
DVD playback out-of-the-box
PS1 compatibility
the coolness factor of owning a PS2
desire to play game X (title:______________)

When did you get your PS2? (month/year)

I can't remember exactly when I got mine, but it was probably about 3-4
years ago. The main reason I got it was that it was free (I got it with
my bonus points on a credit card). I wanted one both for the backward
compatibility (I have about 100 PS1 games) and for the DVD player
because I didn't own one at the time. I didn't get it for the coolness
factor because hardly anyone I know plays video games, and most of them
don't understand why I do.

I didn't have any particular games in mind when I got it, but if I had
to choose between different gaming systems without having had a PS1, I'd
still pick the PS2 for the number of titles available for it especially
the number of RPG's.

I disagree with the idea that the backwards compatibility feature was only
interesting to those who had a PS1 to begin with. Sure, the idea of being
able to replace one console with another while not losing the ability to
play the older games was nice, but what about the people who never owned a
PS1? I would think being able to go back and play those games that I
missed would be a selling point.

I got my PS2 in march or april of 2001. I got it for the DVD
compatibility, PS1 backwards compatibility, and desire to play PS2 games
(I don't remember the titles off hand Wink Coolness factor wasn't so
strong, but hey, new toys are ALWAYS cool.

I'd say they're right. At the time, PlayStation 2's competition was
Dreamcast which had beaten PlayStation 2 to market by well over a year.
So why did PS2 clobber Dreamcast? It wasn't price; Dreamcast was always
cheaper than PS2 up to the point where Sega packed up its hardware
business. It wasn't performance; though PS2 is the technically superior
machine the visible differences on most TV sets is negligible. What did
PS2 have that Dreamcast lacked?

It could play DVDs, which meant that consumers had the choice of buying
one device that was both console and DVD player. It had a huge existing
library of good games that were dropping drastically in price because
PSX was a "last generation" system.

The former was not one of my reasons; I already had a DVD player. On
the other hand, being able to retire my aging PSX was certainly
appealing.

No.

Absolutely. I had (and still have) a huge PSX library.

Enh.

My rule of thumb is that I don't buy a console until there are three
games that I want to play on it. I don't remember what my first three
PS2 titles were.

February or March 2001, I think.

Definitely. I didn't have a DVD player at the time.

> PS1 compatibility

Yes. I did NOT havea PSX, but had noted a lot of games for it that I
wanted to play. Also, I had finall exhausted all the N64 games that I
cared for. I held off on buying a PSX, since the PS2 was coming soon.

> the coolness factor of owning a PS2

Nope. I always buy games because I want them, not because others say I
should have them.

> desire to play game X (title:______________)

No specific game, but a large number of RPGs were there. I bought one
of the Breath of Fire games with the PS2 (I forget if it was BOF3 or
BOF4)

> When did you get your PS2? (month/year)
March '01, IIRC
