All,
The old Shifter prestige class from masters of the wild used to require
that the player had access to wild shape, the polymorph spell, or some
natural racial ability to alter form. I notice that the replacement in
the Complete Adventurer (Master of Many Forms, or something like that)
requires "Wild Shape Class Ability."
I find that pretty darned irritating. I always (personally) think of
shape-shifting as an arcane thing, so the elimination of alternate
paths for this prestige class is kind of annoying. More to the point, I
dont really like Druids, and so I dont want to "waste" a bunch of Druid
levels just so I can get to the prestige class I like.
I am wondering, are there any other full classes or prestige classes
that get access to Wild Shape?
The only way I can think of to get to Master of Many Forms without
being a druid is to play a Hegenyokai (or however it is spelled) from
the Oriental Adventures book, take 7 levels of something I actually
want to play (so i can get the OA shapeshifter requirement of 10 ranks
in concentration), then take 1 level of Shapeshifter from the OA so
that I can get the level 1 ability Class Ability "Wild Shape (3/day"),
then from there I could take Master of Many Forms. The down side is
that I'll have 9 levels worth of stuff spent to get to MOMF 1
(Hegenyokai ECL +1, 7 levels of other, 1 of Shapeshifter).
So, I'm hoping someone can tell me a faster way to get to Master of
Many Forms without having any Druid levels at all.
I also may go to my GM and ask to simply be allowed to play a class I'm
*actually* interested in. Instead of being a Druid for 7 levels (or
whatever it is to get to Wild Shape), I'd take an ECL +1 penalty and be
a 6th level warrior or ranger or something and thanks to my ECL +1 I'd
tack on Wild Shape as a class ability once I got enough XP to hit level
7 (but I'd be level 6 in all other ways). That way I wouldnt get to it
"too soon" but I could actually play a non-Druid Master of Many Forms.
I would consider just going with the OA Shapeshifter but it is a lot
weaker in the shapeshifting department than Master of Many Forms.
Thanks for any help!

Hmm. What are the requirements for the Abolisher? If they seem simple
enough, I might go out and pick up Lords of Madness.
I would love to be the Hegenyokai, except their ability technically
isnt Wild Shape, is it? And its not a class-granted Wild Shape.
Oh well.
Thanks,

Excellent. I dont own Unearth Arcana, but my local store has it. I'll
swing by and check it out and buy it if it looks cool. Much obliged.
If anyone else has any other information on other Prestige Classes that
get Wild Shape, keep them coming. This may do me, however.

In Unearthed Arcana, p58 - there's a Variant Ranger option which gets
Wild Shape (as druid) and fast movement in exchange for the combat style
bonus feats. So you could take 5 levels of the variant Ranger, and then
go into MoMF at 6th level.

There are two I can think of off the top of my head:
The Abolisher, from Lords of Madness, gains a somewhat restrictive form
of Wild Shape (which is still good for getting into MoMF) at level 1.
It's primarily intended for aberration-hating ranger/spellcaster types,
and you can get into it without any druid levels.
The Lion of Talisid gains Wild Shape at level 3, and though it's
primarily intended for exalted druids, there are ways to get into it that
don't require druid levels. Specifically, you can meet the animal
companion requirement by taking 4 levels of ranger or 1 level of
Beastmaster, and you can meet the Summon Nature's Ally 2 requirement by
taking 3 or more levels of Spirit Shaman (which uses the druid's spell
list, but is not a druid).
Also note that in 3.5, the Hengeyokai does not have a +1 LA, because
Shapechanger is a subtype, not a type (so humanoid shapechangers such as
Hengeyokai count as humanoids for purposes of how spells affect them).
If you play in Eberron, there's also the Moonspeaker, which is primarily
intended for Shifter druids, but doesn't actually require druid levels to
get in. However, you wouldn't be getting Wild Shape until very late in
the game, because Moonspeaker requires 8 levels of something with
Knowledge (nature) as a class skill to get in, and doesn't give Wild
Shape until level 5 in the PrC.

I went by the game shop and saw that the class actually REQUIRES
Wildshape ... it only grants +1/day to the wildshape you already have
at level 1.
Someone else showed me the Unearthed Arcana alternate Ranger online
(srd resource) where you just drop the ranger combat style selections
and pick up Wildshape. That seems ideal to me, I will probably go that
route.
Thanks to everyone!

Is 5th level the level that the alternate Ranger gets the Wild Shape?
Or is it at a later level? I need to go by my gaming shop and get the
book (I always wanted the book anyway, now I have an excuse). But if I
can find out what level they get Wild Shape, I can plan my character
now.

The prereqs are Track, Wild Empathy, Knowledge (nature) 9 ranks,
Knowledge (dungeoneering) 4 ranks, non-chaotic, non-aberration.
The class has medium BAB, d8 HD, Good Will, 4+int skill points/level,
and advances divine spellcasting 8 levels out of 10. Other than the
Wildshape, most of its abilities are about fighting aberrations.

The Shapeshifter from OA, which grants Wildshape, allows you to get in
if you have a natural Alternate Form-type ability, which Hengeyokai do,
or the ability to cast Polymorph. So you could get in either has a
Hengeyokai anything with 10 ranks of Concentration, a 7th level Shaman
(which has Polymorph on its spell list), or a Wu Jen. And with one
level of Shapeshifter, Alertness, and Endurance, you can then go into
MoMF.

Correct, at 5th level. Just like the normal Druid.

The obvious fix being to put it at 6th, so it costs something, and
then wake up and ban the whole concept. Munchkin nonsense at it's worst,
that particular combo.
Beware mixing books, unless you like being a first-round playtester.

It *already* costs something to get the Wild Shape, specifically the
Ranger's Combat Styles - which is a *core* part of the classes' combat
utility. So they're losing combat feats at 2nd, 6th, and 11th in order to
get Wild Shape at 5th. (and they only get the basic Wild Shape -
small/medium Animals only. So they won't be getting most of the combat-
type forms like Dire Bear, at least not with Ranger levels.)
It honestly doesn't appear to be even slightly munchkin.
Nor do I think it becomes munchkin by going into Master of Many Forms.
The standard Druid 5/MoMF 10 gets:
Wild Empathy, Nature Sense, Trackless Step, Woodland Stride, Resist
Natures Lure, a 5th-level Animal Companion, *and* 5/3/2/1 spells (plus
bonus spells), in addition to Wild Shape and the improvements offered by
MoMF.
By comparison, a Variant Ranger 5/MoMF 10 gets:
Wild empathy, Track, Fast Movement, Endurance, a 2nd level Animal
Companion (worthless), only two Favored Enemies, and *maybe* one or two
first-level spells per day with high wisdom, plus Wild Shape and its MoMF
improvements. They also get +2 BAB and +16 skill points (roughly one
skill, by that level, although it really means two skills which stopped
improving after 5th).
Doesn't really seem unbalanced to me.

Well that stinks! I guess I never bothered to read up on that class...
I always thought it'd be a hoot to play a Doopleganger and take up
that prestigue class later.
Doesn't the Slime Master prestigue class have some sort of ability to
