Hi - I'm looking to build a mame cabinet just for driving games. I build a
few mame games in the past but never one for driving games only. I'm
planning on using a steering wheel for my controller but I'm not sure what
the best rout is?
My question is, what's the best controller to use. I know some games work
better with some controllers. Should I use an optic interface or pot? Does
someone sell a driving controller for mame?
thanks for any help. >> Stay informed about: Driving games |

It depends on the driving games you want to play. Some games require a 270
degree wheel and other use a wheel similar to a spinner, What games are you
going to use? >> Stay informed about: Driving games |

thanks for the input....I was planning on playing a bunch of driving games
on this cabinet but I guess I have to narrow it down to the controller's
ability.
How about a PC type wheel that I can plug into the game port? I'm guessing
I will still need to narrow down my games to the controller's abilities but
does mame support PC wheel controllers?

How about a selection of controllers that can be mounted on a common
mount? A push-to-fit edge connector that connects with a piece of
board onto which you mount the wheel and gears should do, then just
have a slot on the cabinet to slide it into. The edge connector (or
similar) can then have set wiring for each different type of
controller. Doesn't need to be one of those complicated rotating
control panel type affairs.

I used a plain ol' USB steering wheel for my driving cabinet. I spent some
time looking for one that would work with both the PC and PlayStation, and
so I can play both retro games in MAME, modern PC games and modern PS games
all in the same unit. I've found that to be a particularly satisfying
combination.
You can read all about my cabinet and see lots of pictures on my web site at
www.adamdawes.com -- I'd be glad to answer any questions you have.
MAME has an extremely flexible input configuration window which is quite
capable of talking to joysticks and steering wheels. I did consider trying
to get some kind of flight yoke controller so that I could play games like
Star Wars, Star Blade, etc., but in the end I decided to focus on the
driving games and bought a wheel instead.

Yes mame supports a usb plug in type wheel that has pedals and can be used
for 270 degree steering wheel games. I have also mounted my spinners at a
60 degree angle to the front of my machine. The spinners have brass
bushings installed in the control panel and have been collared to reduce
weight on the spinners bearings. I remove the spinner knobs and put on
steering wheels when I want to play driving games that need 360 degree
wheels. I also added plug in foot pedals for those driving games. My panel
is removeable and is 42 inches wide. It supports 4 player games and two
players can play simulataneous tank games standing beside one another or a
single player may play tank style games centered using the player 2 and
player one sticks. I have a removeable shelf that I slide into the front of
the game when I want to put the usb steering wheel on the game or if I have
to add analog usb joysticks for games like t mek >> Stay informed about: Driving games |

thanks for the info. Do you happen to know what's the name or who makes
this UBS controller you talked about? What ver. mame are we talking about
here?
I do have a spinner on my other mame cabinet, I need to play around with and
see how it works with driving games.

I have MAME set up too, but if I'm honest I've spent a lot more time playing
Burnout than MAME. I did spend a weekend playing Out Run, but despite my
affection for the game I'm still rubbish at it! :-/

I am using ver 109 for mame. I have been unhappy wih some of the newer
versions of mame. Itried to update a little while ago and the first game I
played donkey kong was not working correctly and a few other games that
worked before stopped working so I went back to less games but my favorites
had no problems >> Stay informed about: Driving games |
