I eventually got Double Dragon II running at full speed (or something
close to it), but I haven't had much luck with the first Double Dragon.
I've done everything from using multiple emulators to hardware upgrades
to increasing the frameskip and overclock CPU settings. Nothing has had
much of an effect on it.

It makes me wonder if this game has been poorly emulated. Can anyone
run this game at full speed? What emulator did you use? What does
your machine look like?

I wouldn't classify the trouble I have had as slowdowns. The whole game
is just running slow the whole way. Even when my guy is standing there
by himself with no enemies to fight, it is still struggling with the
music.

Slow downs in Double Dragon are normal. The original arcade machine had
them, too.

Mine runs at full whack on a P4 1.6GHz machine.

Computer in an old cabinet sort of look.

Try FastMAME. That should do the trick.

My computer is admittedly slow. It is 400mhz processor. I put in an ati
128 mb agp card. It has 128 megs of ram. I'm trying to get more (and
perhaps faster) ram this weekend.

Despite this, I've been able to get almost all the games I want to play
to run at or near full speed. Sometimes, it took a while and a lot of
experimentation. For instance, star wars the arcade game wouldn't run
on mame, but it runs perfectly with dmame without my having to do
anything to help it. And side-scrollers similar to double dragon
(double dragon 2, xmen tag, rastan, crime fighters, forgotten worlds,
etc.) run well with some tweaking on my part.

I've tried running DD with various windows versions of Mame and various
versions of DMAME. It hasn't worked.

I'll try it thanks.

I was able to run double dragon properly on that spec machine, but
only using mame 0.36 IIRC, I later updated to 0.6 something and it
would no longer run double dragon at full speed. That was why I
originally upgraded to a P4 1.6GHz.

So I'd suggest you either upgrade your machine or go back to an
earlier version of mame. Later versions emulate more hardware rather
than using temporary hacks like the earlier versions did, while that's
more accurate in terms of emulating how the game originally
functioned, it does require more CPU power so it slows the games
down. If you upgrade to later versions of mame, it'll almost always
get slower rather than faster because of this.

I have really got to get me to a DD cab and see this for myself.
Playing it under MAME is so slow in spots it's painful, and I really
don't remember it being like that in the arcade.

Wouldn't be the first game I've come across that's not nearly as good as
I remember it being.

-D.

Run a speed monitor at the top of the screen (on linux it's F11) and
check it out when slowdowns happen. The old arcade machine did indeed
slow down itself, but it wasn't by an awful lot.

LOL. I'm not alone. Misery loves company Smile

There is a computer show this weekend. I should be able to find RAM,
the question is how much it costs. My computer is a gateway 2000 or
2001. It was free, so you will never hear me complaining about it.

Part of the problem with these old games is it is difficult to tell if
they are running at full speed or not. After all, it has been at least
15 years since I last played a real double dragon machine. And it was
one of the forefathers of side-scrollers. Sometimes I think that I may
be expecting too much from it. I definitely do remember the slowdowns
in the arcade, though, whenever a lot of guys were on the screen at one
time.

The important thing to keep in mind is that our computers are only one
facet of our home arcades. I didn't buy an nes, snes, genesis, atari
7800, n64, dreamcast, PS1, atari flashback 2, etc. for nothing. By the
end of the summer I will have a gamecube, and a ps2 by the end of the
year. For an old-time gamer like myself, the collection I have now was
once thought unattainable. Oh, those bleak days!

There's no shortage of great ports here on my end, although money does
seem a bit more scarce than it ever was Smile
