A pair of neogi sorcerors were facing my PCs. One was obviously the
boss, and
was ordering the other one around.

The boss neogi would say fireball, and they would both cast fireball.
He would
say Magic Missle on the wizard, and they would both cast that.

Then, when things started looking bad for them, he shouted "teleport",
and they
both vanished.

The PCs assumed (wrongly) that they had teleported. They then all
gathered
around a table to look at the interesting treasure that was there.
That was when
they were hit by two more fireballs (surprise round)

The neogi had cast invisibility on themselves, being a team that had
worked
together for a long time.

You should have seen the look on their faces. The neogi won
initiative, and
the boss said, "Hold them off while I go for help" and turned
invisible, while
the other one kept tossing fireballs until the party fried him.

Any other dirty tricks along these lines....?

I once had a badly wounded dragon use Dancing Lights, if you can believe
it, to frighten off a PC and thus gain a respite. Of course, they
eventually did come back and wipe the dragon, but I was still kind of
surprised the PC took the bait.

sorta accidentlly found a mean move last night;

two pcs adjacent to another hit by the confuse spell, both fail
saves... first warrior rolls above 69 and has to attack nearest
creature. second warriors turn, and we discover in the fine print that
a confused creature whos been attacked automaticly attacks back. so
they were stuck in a loop of just attacking eachother till they made
their saves... pretty nasty.

enemy wizard on losing side of battle going invisible and looting the
corpses before the pc's...

And then there was the vampire sorceror who managed to Charm the
rear-guard PC and take him away from the party quietly. The two of them
went off to the vampire's lair, where the vampire and his minions put
the PC to sleep via a Symbol of Sleep, then carefully put him in the
coffin and Polymorphed him to be an exact replica of said vampire.

When the rest of the party broke into the lair later and found a coffin
with a sleeping vampire in it, they naturally took out their stakes, and...

I think you can see where this went.

Hmmm, I like a pit trap with a grease area
around 3 sides. When one of the adventurers
fall in, they roll down the sloped floor to the
opposite end. The greased sides are sloped
toward the pit, so when the helpers try to pull
out the victim, they make a reflex roll to keep
from falling in themselves. THEN when they
finally make it out, they continue on down the
hallway, little do they know that the secret door
that they need to find is in the bottom of the pit.

One trick I used back in the 1e days were big glass bulbs full of
knockout-gas potion. On each bulb I cast a *magic mouth*, programmed
to sing a glass-shattering high note when an appropriate triggering
condition was met.

I actually created and used this one *as a player* rather than as a
DM.

I always wanted to use a Wall of Force to
thwart overeager Fireball-users:

A dark broad corridor lighted further ahead by
torches. It leads to a room full of monsters
(perfect FB targets), maybe even illusionary.

If the group would choose to go any further,
they become visible to the monsters...
....so Fireball from afar!
But there's a Wall of Force (or natural glass?)
10 ft. before the PCs.
*BOOM*

A contrived setup unless the PCs are well-known
for the "FB from afar tactic" and the whole thing is
a cunning trap.

Had a mage at one point in 2nd edition that
I was planning on making a prank-playing
mage. Planned on having a Psuedodragon
familiar. Sample pranks, cast enlarge or shrink
on someones pants, boots, or belt. Cast
invisible on someones horse while they sleep.
Cast illusions while in a tense situation (maybe
an illusion of a skeleton in a graveyard. All these
were meant to be once a day spells that he
HAD to cast on friends as part of his religion.
Of course, a SADISTIC player could take
this MUCH further. Maybe this would have
better been a Bard.

Had a PC wizard use this one, but the other PCs didn't want to wait for
the enemies to battle it out, so it only ended up being a round of
that. IIRC the fight where the wizard did that they almost lost the
fight. Wizard didn't do that again because he figured the other PCs
would continue to be impatient.

*snicker*

Well, that's what they get for failing their Spellcraft checks.

Whew. I was hoping I wasn't the only one pedantic enough to notice
this first off...

I could imagine a white dragon (or other fire-vulnerable creature)
setting up an overlook & wall of force to encourage this very tactic.
