( DirecTv DVR R10 is the combo Sat receiver / Tivo unit )

Sorry, I know this has probably been covered many times before
but I have not been in here for some time...

I want to cancel my local phone service. We both have cell phones
and the only thing we use the phone line for is the R10. Since it
costs about $27.00 a month for the line, we'd like to drop it.
I also have a DSL line. If the R10 does need to call in could I use
that instead?

Thanks, Phil

So, to be clear, you have 2 phone numbers now, one with the DSL riding on it
and the other just POTS. You want to cancel the POTS line, keeping the
phone number the DSL is on. Your TiVo should have no problem dialing out on
the phone line that has DSL as long as you put the phone filter on.

Unless he has a dedicated/standalone DSL line that doesn't have
voice-tone on it..

I can't tell you about the R10 and no phone line, but the obvious test
is to unplug its phone line and see what happens?

Otherwise, dTiVo's do work over Vonage and other VOIP providers for
their semi-daily call-in.

That's possible, but rare. Most DSL providers won't provide service on
an inactive line. Trust me, I tried! The only ones that will even
think about it are those that provide all their own equipment (DSLAMs
and everything) and not just reselling service off the Telco's DSLAMs,
because the RBOCs won't do it.

Depends on the RBOC. Qwest and Verizon in the NE do it all the time.

Really? Well, that's just annoying, Bellsouth won't even entertain the
idea. Their entire database is keyed to phone number, and if you don't
have one of theirs they can't even find your account.

I had a separate DSL line from Ameritech for years until I moved. It was
called an unbundled loop.

And you are sooo correct about the account number. It was like trying to
move heaven and earth to get service because they wanted the phone number on
the line, which of course didn't exist.

After SBC and Ameritech merged it was even worse. SBC knew nothing about
Ameritech's data lines and I had search to find the lone guy who was left
from Ameritech who knew anything about the unbundled loops.

By the time I moved they had switched everything over to bundled loops, data
over the voice line.

No. Just one line that carries both the voice & DSL service. But from what
I've read before, it may well be possible to drop the voice/phone service
and just keep the DSL service intact.
Paying $27 bucks a month, just so Tivo can make about 4 calls a month is a
luxury we can't afford any more ...

(I can hear people asking ... "two cell phone?" But they are Virgin Mobile,
light usage, and run less than $150 a year in total fees for both phones)

Getting back to the main question - does the R10 need to call in for updating?
My understanding is that it gets the program/guide updates from the sat.
The phone calls are just to update its 'logic' programming for lack of a better term.

Thanks, Phil

I can't speak specifically for the R10, but I can vouch that "other"
DirecTiVos can operate just fine for extended periods of time with no phone
line once they have been setup. Should you ever need to rerun guided setup,
you will have to use a phone line then.

If the R10 is different from all the other DirecTiVos in that respect, I
don't know and hopefully someone else running that specific model can chime
in to agree or refute.
