Hi,

Given all the recent threads about copy protection and digital
downloads, this weekend I took a close look at how one publisher
decided to do it. Specifically, I bought and downloaded GalCiv 2 from
Stardock. Let me add that I don't think any of this applies to the
store-bought version of the game.

Since I'd already dealt with the company a couple of years ago to
buy the original GalCiv, I reactivated my old account using my e-mail
address as the ID. After entering the info to purchase the game, I
downloaded their download manager, Stardock Central. Here you get what
seems to be the only real copy protection for the game, the download
manager has to have a valid account name to connect to their website.
Pretty simple and straight-forward but what struck me was that
Stardock seems to bend over backward as far as what you can do after
you download the game the first time.

The company actually gives you permission to install the software on
multiple computers as long as you're the only person using the
software.

If you want to install it on a PC w/o an internet connection, they
give you an archive function to help in moving the files over.

If you're worried about their download manager calling home to check
for updates every time you start the game, you can disable it and just
download the major patches from the web site. You just miss out on the
incremental updates in between.

If you're worried about loosing the files due to a HD crash, you can
just log on to their web site and download everything again. It
actually gave me the option to download and reinstall the original
GalCiv that I bought 4(?) years ago.

Overall, from a user's perspective this is the friendliest way of
handling digital downloads that I've ever run across.

Rgd, Frank

If you buy the CD version, there is no activation needed via Stardock.
They just use a serial number. The activation scheme is only for the
digital download (which you have to download thru Stardock anyway).
The digital download does suffer from the same problem - if the company
goes belly up then you won't be able to reinstall it. Those worried
about that can buy a CD.

I think the archive tool is part of Stardock which you have to somehow
install on the new PC first. However, I am completely unfamiliar with
the archive function so it may work. I know the CD is just a serial
number however as the developer specifically said so.

I've ordered the CD/DVD version, when it arrives I will keep you updated. I
don't like copy protection that requires activation, all it does is send a
message that the pirated version is easier to use....

Sounds ok by me - not my genre though

But they're DOOMED as anyone who's been out of publishing games for the
past 3 years can tell you Smile

I don't think it does. Since they give you an archive tool for backing
up and installing the game on a different PC, seems to me that you'd
have to be able to use that to backup the software.

So long as you can get all the stuff you need to do an installation from
whole cloth on a new PC without an internet connection, then you're all
set.

I just bought BIRTH OF AMERICA, and those guys are another solid check
in the "Doing Downloads Right" column. Paid my money, downloaded my
file, read my unlock code off the web, and was up and running in just a
few minutes - with a saved copy of the file and unlock code safely in my
backups.

Oh. One more thing. I quickly found out that my laptop wasn't quite
beefy enough to run BIRTH OF AMERICA in the style to which I'm
accustomed[1]. So I had to reinstall the game/code on my desktop PC,
and I'm much happier with the game on a more powerful machine.

In other words, *ten minutes* after downloading and installing this
game, I was reinstalling it. Had it featured some Byzantine
"activation" scheme, I'd have been screwed, and would have spent the
afternoon explaining to some Hindu that I'm not a crook.

[1] Time for a new laptop, I guess, but that's not a question for
today...
