Yeah, my next char is gonna be a bloodletter, figure I'll give melee a
shot;-)

I haven't done anything in "elite" mode yet. From what I hear, it's harder
monsters, smaller copper drops, more mobs, more bosses, and potentially
better rare drops. And of course, Hardcore mode is the same as D2 HC.

Yep, can't convert a char from normal to elite or HC, can't interact with
them either.

Ahh yes, the enchanter can give some VERY nice stuff. It's random, and you
may get junk, but otoh, you can get very lucky too. I had him enchant some
plain unmodded gloves, and got something like +10 dex, +22% increased rate
of fire, and +12 luck(not sure if the manual says it, but luck=MF and is
capped at 100 last I checked). Not bad mods for a gun user;-)

Isn't the Bloodletter also not the build which has a quite viable Minion
tree a la the Necromancer?

In-game most people seem to point one towards Elite for the better drops.
Same in the forums. No idea how 'crowded' Elite is?

Hmm, figures, although perhaps in the final version they should perhaps
consider keeping the amount of seperate 'realms' a bit lower. In the
current setup there are 4, Normal/Elite + SC/HC. But perhaps they're using
Normal/Elite to get a feel for what's doable, but still challenging..?

Nice. I just gave it some random junk items, to get some extra mods, and
the Enchanter quite nicely provided these, and I was lucky, since no
'junk' mods were added. Wink

You're still running SETI? If so, and there was any problem with the
CPU/RAM/Mobo subset then you'd be seeing 'compute errors' on your results
page. Sounds to me like it's likely just graphics card.

You guys have me quite interested. My P35/Core 2 Duo @ 3.3GHz with 2GB RAM
should be okay I'm guessing. What about the 7800GT? Hopefully it'll be good
enough. I might Google later. <g>

No, nothing wrong with the CPU. Just a freezing display after about 0.5 to
1.5 hours of heavy 3D activity. I finally settled on the NVidia 'Froggy'
demo in Flyby 2 mode to test this; after running that for about 0.5-1.0
hours, the display would start to stutter, artifacts would appear, but the
temperatures according to nTune/Everest, still looked quite within specs.

I assume it is/was another component, not near any of the temperature
sensors, and perhaps not making good contact with the gargantuan cooler on
the 8800GTX, overheating and failing after warming up for that period of
time.

However, when installing a loaner card from the above-mentioned shop,
things went from wrong to worse, and now the system isn't booting anymore,
or very erratically, and this looks very much mainboard-related.
Installing either card (8800GTX, 8600GT) doesn't make any difference.
Perhaps the installation/deinstallation only provoked another problem in
the mainboard, and perhaps a component on the mainboard, related perhaps
to the PCI-E bus, was overheating, and causing the failures.

Anyway, this is now out of my league, since I don't have another system
with a PCI-E bus to test with, nor do I have another PCI-E card to
experiment with either.

>You guys have me quite interested. My P35/Core 2 Duo @ 3.3GHz with 2GB RAM

I think it'll run it fine enough. It doing semi-OK on my P4-2.4GHz with a
7600GT, and most slowdowns are more CPU/processing related than the
videocard not being able to keep up. Of course, running it under Vista
isn't helping either, and with the Q6600 system away, I'm seriously
considering reverting back to XP on that machine.

Regards, Patrick.

Aye, there are some bloodletter minion builds that I don't know specifics.

Elite is fairly popular. For what it's worth, drops aren't so much "better"
in elite, it's simply that bosses and superunique monsters have a higher
chance to drop purple rarity and higher items, and due to the fact that
there's more boss and super mobs in elite mode, you have more chances to get
those items.

Not sure, I tend to think of it as being like SCL(elite)/SCNL(normal) and
likewise HCL/HCNL in D2.

Aye, the enchanter is a great source of gear. Can get costly, but you can
get some really nice stuff from him.

Same here, but definately something to find out, especially since I'm also
rather fond of a Summoner in D2.

BTW, is there a skill like the Sorceress' Teleport in this game?

That's what it indeed looks like, but without the limited 'lifetime' of a
Ladder, I'm not sure what Elite would do/add. We'll see, perhaps Flagship
still has some nice goodies in store for us.

Is running into an Enchanter a random event, or are they sprinkled around
the map at pre-set locations?

Aye, not sure if Mythos summoners are on par with D2 ones, but I know
they're out there.

Not that I know of, though there may be one on the pyromancer trees(dunno
their skills at all).

Hmm, true...

Based on what I've seen so far, each "act" has 1 specific town where the
enchanter stays. Also, if you're out adventuring and fighting, and you see a
"wandering merchant" be SURE and check their stuff. From my experience, it's
almost always a higher level than the general stuff you find at the same
area, and they often stock purple/orange items.

Well, if your next character is a Bloodletter, perhaps it'd be more
efficient if try a Pyromancer? Our current setup, where we're both
building a Barrage/Napalm Gadgeteer isn't uncovering too much new ground,
and things won't improve if we both build a Bloodletter next. Wink

Woops. I can't for the life of me recall where I ran into the Enchanter in
Act 1. Time to do some city-re-exploring then, since I still have plenty
of coins to burn, since the same random guy who gave me some nice
rifles/rings/amulets, also handed over about 5 gold (For those wondering,
the money in Mythos is divided in Copper, Silver and Gold coins. 100
Copper get you a Silver, and 100 Silver get you a Gold.)

Is in-game coinage the preferred currency when trading actually? I also
see there are plenty of gem-types (much more than in D2, with things like
Aquamarines, Pearls, etc). But I haven't spotted anything 'rune' like, yet
anyway?

Do you mean the merchants who are usually parked on top of a dungeon, or
is there another class of merchant that really 'wanders' around?

LOL, I...forget what town he's in too, heh. I know in act 2 he hangs out in
Aven's Cut, but I just can't recall the act 1 town he's in, heh.

Yeah, most trades are done with actual coins, though a few gems have
value(the ones that add luck, I forget which they are) fetch a reasonable
price. There's not any runes yet, though from what I understand that's being
"worked on".

> Do you mean the merchants who are usually parked on top of a dungeon, or

There actually is a "wandering" merchant who randomly appears in explorable
areas, usually standing near a house or building of some sort. I don't know
where all they can spawn or if it's just certain areas they can appear in, I
don't know if there's anyway or anything you can do to "encourage" their
appearance, etc, I just know that from time to time I find a merchant out in
explorable zones who usually had comparatively high end gear.

OK, will do. If I get some time this coming weekend, I'll start a 2nd
char, a Pyromancer. Until clvl5 I can in any case re-allocate the skills
at will. Hopefully that will give me an idea of what to expect/do.

Aha, ok, I'll keep an eye out for the +luck gems. Until now, I've stashed
away all gems I find, since they're not too common. The stash is pretty
big, but of course I will run out of room soon enough. Wink

OK, never ran into this one, but I'll keep an eye out then!

Cool. I'm certainly not ready to give up D2 yet but variety is the spice of
life and all that. I haven't found a game since D2 that's kept me interested
for more than a week or three, Mythos sounds like it might.

One more option to consider: That 8800GTX behemoth really sucks the power. I
take it that there are (2?) 12V leads going from the power supply to the
card. If they're on a dedicated sub-circuit of the PSU then the problem
could lie within the PSU (failed capacitors...). Just a thought, it could be
cheaper to try/get the PC shop to try/ a different PSU before a new
motherboard and/or graphics card.

Excellent.

I will vigourously defend my PCs from Vista and could only see myself ever
using it if there was a killer app that I required that needed Vista to run.
Otherwise I'm sticking with XP. I hear Microsoft have accelerated their
development of the next Windows significantly. As an indication of it's
popularity, on NZ's version of eBay, XP licences outsell Vista and also sell
for more.

Yep, 2 x PCI-E lead going to the 8800GTX. The supply is an Antec NeoHE550.
I'm not discounting anything, but the times the machine did start up (best
chances when I booted it 'cold' after it had been turned off during
daytime or night), no complaints about that. The NVidia drivers have AFAIK
a way of detecting whether the videocard gets enough power, and pop up a
warning when it doesn't. (It did when I once forgot to connect the
power-lead to a 6600GT).

Anyway, I dropped it off yesterday-evening, they would be looking at it
this morning, so I'll hear from them when/if they find the cause of it
all.

I had installed Vista more out of curiosity than anything else, when I got
the old gaming machine replaced with the new one. I never did expect to
have to get back to the 'old' machine in this way. I also found the option
in the shortcut to turn of Aero when starting a program, so that allows me
to run Diablo II, combined with Sven Labusch' Glide Wrapper, under Vista
without major problems or a lot of fiddling.

Regards, Patrick.
