Nah, it's marksmanship based gadgeteer build. They max out the barrage line
of skills, the skills that add to rifle range and rate of fire, and the
napalm skill line. Barrage does big AoE damage, and Napalm does concentrated
damage, good for bosses and small groups. Coupled with a strong rifle, a
piercing barrager can wipe out hordes of enemies before it ever sees
them...closest D2 comparison would be a light fury javazon with high pierce,
and with charged strike for boss killing.

Aha, ok. I finally got some more playing time in after I solved my
crashing problem: seems the resident part of the recently upgraded Spybot
S&D played havoc with Mythos (but also with Diablo II, so that got me
suspicious this problem wasn't Mythos-related).
Posted about it in the forums, and also answered my own question.
Anyway, as to the build: I'm still hesitant to spend skill points; there
sure are plenty of paths to choose. I'll also have to read-in a bit in
possible builds; hopefully I can hold off spending skill-points until I've
done that.
The free 'Boom Zipper' skill from my starter-rifle is also pretty neat, so
I'm tempted to go for that path; should be more trapper-like I suppose.

Check. Now I'm back to checking some other things with my gaming-system,
to check if I really solved those crashes by uninstalling Spybot. :S

Well, here's one thing you may like. You can refund your skill points freely
up until level 5, then you can refund them 3 times afterwards, though there
is a fee(1k copper for the first refund I believe). So don't hesitate to
play around, if worst comes to worst and you hate the skill setup, you can
refund your skillpoints later on.

Well, it seems the problems weren't over. Mythos still sometimes freezes
under XP. The game consumes 100% of 1 core of my Q6600 and is effectively
standing still. However, I can alt-Tab out of it, and then kill it using
Task Manager. It's also not easy to reproduce: sometimes it runs ok for
hours on end, other times it slows down within a few minutes.
So I then tried it under Vista64, if it had something to do with the
install of WinXP. That one crashed even more spectacular: the game stays
ok for a few minutes, then I get a few black-flashes on the screen, after
which Vista64 explodes with a BSOD error in the NVidia drivers.
I followed-up on my own posting in the Crashes forum a few times, but no
response yet.
It's more or less unplayable now.

I'm a level Gadgeteer now, invested in Barrage and 1 point in Napalm.
Working nicely. Also ran into someone online who gave me a few guns for
later on; it was however quite difficult to be able to accept these items,
since the game was crashing a lot.

Well, played some Crysis last evening for a few hours, without any
problems, and that's working nicely. So I have a pretty good idea my WinXP
DirectX/8800GTX configuration is still ok, and I'm more and more thinking
Mythos somehow isn't working nicely together with my config...
Hopefully this is fixable, since playing it in the current state isn't a
lot of fun...

Meh, not good. I haven't had anything like that happen with it so far...

My gadgeteer is at 22, started a bloodletter who's lvl 7 at the moment.

Well, I also installed it on my 'old' 'ex-gaming' machine (a P4-2.4GHz
with 1.5GB of memory and a 7600GT card runnin Vista32 as an experiment),
and on that, it seems to work ok, though a bit sluggish.
Apparently it doesn't seem to like the combination of hardware on the
faster machine,

It's too bad, because it looks and feels like a really nice game.

Well, my new 'Game Machine' more or less 'exploded' yesterday-evening.
Won't boot up anymore with any consistency, so I'm returning it to the
shop I bought it from tomorrow-evening. I suppose that was also the reason
Mythos wasn't running stable on that machine.
Currently logged some more hours on the 'old' machine
(P4-2.4GHz/1.5GB/6600GT), and that's working quite stable. My gadgeteer is
currently clvl13, and managing quite nicely. Maxed Barrage, am about 4/6
in the next Barrage skill, also put about 5/6 points in Napalm. Nice.
Also found and tried an 'Epic' map; despite the low level, pretty hefty.
I'm liking it quite a lot, and it is very, _very_ much like Diablo II.
Looking forward to playing it in all it's graphical glory once the main
game-machine is returned, in 100% working order.

Yeah, I'd say that might be the source of the problem, LOL.

Yeah, piercing and glancing barrage is devastating against mobs. Also make
sure to put points in black powder and, uhh, tinker I think, the ones that
increase the damage, range, and rate of fire of your guns.

Yeah, some of those epic maps are beastly.

Wait till you get to "act 2", which has a desert theme and a "puzzle box"
that allows you for example to store items in it, upgrade gems and potions,
etc, heh.

Well, it all started with the suspicion the graphics card would error out
after being stressed for about 0.5 to 1.0 hours. Things got much worse
after that.

Aha, so those are the passives? I more or less assumed these were seperate
skills, but now that I look at it, I should've seen they are passives.
That's something that could be improved, I suppose.
How many points do you recommend? Maxing them? Will that leave you with
enough skill points to also max the Barrage and Napalm sub-trees?

What's the general rule with these? I'm still playing Normal, but at what
clvl should I think of being able to solo what lvl of Epic map?

disguise!

I'm sure that will be solved, I've been buying my computer hardware at
that same shop for the past years, but I'm a bit wary for the amount of
time the machine will be out of commission; getting replacements for a
defective mainboard and/or graphics card does take some time, in my
experience.

Aye.

They're very useful to have, especially the one that improves range. With
maxed range and piercing barrage, you'll quite literally be killing things
before they're even on your screen.
> How many points do you recommend? Maxing them? Will that leave you with

If you take your character to lvl 50(which is max level), you'll have enough
to totally max the napalm and barrage trees, tinker, black power, AND still
have something like 10 points left over(most napalm/barrages use these
points to max out the other passive line, rally and whatever is linked to
it)
> What's the general rule with these? I'm still playing Normal, but at what

Generally, with a good weapon and decent armor(dont overlook the gambler
btw, gambling items there, especially ones that cost 1 gold or more, can net
you REALLY good stuff) you should be able to do epics within a couple levels
of your own.

Will I ever see monsters again then? One improves range (Black Powder
IIRC), the other improves firing speed, and has a higher level 'synergy'
which also adds Critical Damage (Tinker et al IIRC).

I'll have to review all trees again, including the other 2 trees with
useful passives. When recalling there are 2 more classes, each with 3 of
those large skill trees, there's plenty more to explore!

So when gambling, the price of a gamble already indicates whether it
_could_ be any good? In that way it would then be quite unlike Diablo II,
where each to-be-gamled item has the same price, depending on type of
course.

So, err, what is 'Act 2': that's when you move from Stonehill via the
balloon to, err, what's it called, Perrin's Faith or something?
I travelled there once, saw a whole new bunch of quests, but also pretty
high level area. I was wrong BTW, my Gadgeteer was level 11, not 13, when
I wrote that. He's now 12 though, so I'm close to the truth.

Time is of the essence...

Oh yes, just...less of them;-)

Yeah think thats right.

Indeed, I've only explored htis one build really, so I still got lots to do
too.

Yeah, the higher the price, the higher the "rarity level" of the item,
usually. An item that costs multiple gold pieces is most likely an "orange"
item. For comparison to D2, in Mythos "green" items are like magics, blue
items are like somewhat better magics, purple are rares, yellow are uniques,
and oranges are high level rares.

Yeah, the balloon to Turin's Hope.

Yeah, one of the first quests you get is the cube quest, and it's like meant
for lvl 14-15 or so.

Hehehehe.

Hmmm, if/when I have some more time, I'll definately try some other
chars/builds.
When I do that, I suppose it would be handier to start in that other
difficulty which is not Normal? Forgot the name of it, and it doesn't seem
to be mentioned in the on-line manual, now that I checked that.
I also didn't find any way to convert a character from 'Normal' to
'<forgot it>'? Impossible I suppose?

Aha. I also found a travelling 'Enchanter' somewhere in Act I, and using
that I could spend quite a bit of my coinage into upgrading my equipment.
Very nice! Sort of like Charsi's 'imbue', but able to work on existing
items, and adding modifiers to them.

Aha, I should be able to do that soon!
