Post subject: Diablo II under Vista64 using Labusch Glide Wrapper? Archived from groups: alt>games>diablo2 (more info?)

Hi,
I'm fiddling around a bit with Windows Vista64 on my new gaming rig
(mostly checking out the visual differences between DirectX10 games), but
I also tried to run Diablo II under Vista64.
It looks like Diablo II in Direct3D mode behaves the same as under
WinXP32: a bit of a stuttering experience, but it works.
However, the Sven Labusch Glide Wrapper seems to have some serious
problems with Vista64: things seem to go really really slow: when I start
Diablo II in Glide mode, I see characters slowly counting up in ASCII in
the upper left corner (it also does this under WinXP, but it counts up so
quicly it's hard to follow). And if I wait long enough, it does start up,
but with a seriously corrupted display. I am using the latest version of
the wrapper: 1.4b.
Anyone here ever try this combination, and got it working? I've also
mailed Sven Labusch, but haven't heard anything back.
Regards,
Patrick. >> Stay informed about: Diablo II under Vista64 using Labusch Glide Wrapper? |

Anyone? I checked the group for Vista experiences, but found preciously
little. It seems a 'fresh' install won't auto-update via B.Net, but in my
case I just copied the install dir from under WinXP over.
Despite e-mailing to Sven Labusch' contact address as listed on
www.svenswrapper.de, I haven't heard anything back. D3D works, but a lot
less smooth than Glide/WinXP.
What (other) issues did people run into when running D2 under Vista (32 or
64 bit)?

Patrick. >> Stay informed about: Diablo II under Vista64 using Labusch Glide Wrapper? |

Sorry I can't help with this Patrick as I wouldn't run Vista if you gave it
to me (but that's a different story).
However, with my limited knowledge I would think that an API would have to
specifically (re-)written for it to run in a 64 bit environment. <shrug> As
I said, not my forté but it makes sense to me. Have you used the wrapper
with XP 64 bit before?
Cheers,

Yeah, well, I'm not too happy about it either, but it's unfortunately the
only way to get DirectX10 to work, eh?

Nope. I still have XP 32bits on that machine, and that's also what it
boots in by default. However, I'd like to reclaim that last 1GB of memory,
so that's why I, if/when I 'need' to go over, wanted to go to the 64-bits
version of Vista.
I also installed SP1 RC1 for Vista, but that didn't solve the problem
either. I still get silence from Mr. Labusch. I also started it up, and it
seems everything Glide related just runs painfully slow. I get as far as
the startup screen, and the 'create game' screen, but when I try to join
or create a game there, it goes into that slow 'test' or 'check' where it
seems to display all the ASCII chars in the top-left corner, counting up.
This takes ages, and I suppose the create/join times out in that, so after
several minutes, I end up back in the Create/Join screen.
Bioshock runs pretty nicely though, and looks a bit nicer with the
DirectX10 options enabled. Crysis is another one of those problems: the
32-bits version runs ok, but the 64-bits version displays a 'Crysis
stopped responding' after a few seconds'. No idea why; patched up to 1.1,
but that didn't help either.
All-in-all, I'll probably shelve Vista for the next 'milestone' when a
game I really like requires it...

Well, reporting back here: I got an email back from Sven Labusch, and the
guy is amazing.
I got the Glide Wrapper working correctly by disabling the Vista 'Aero'
theme (and reverting back to the Windows Classic theme). Of course, I hope
Sven can fix his wrapper in such a way that the two don't interfere, but
at least the cause is known.
He also managed to provide me with a solution to a recently-developed
problem under WinXP32: the blue desktop-background after quitting Diablo
II + Glide Wrapper. He advised me to use a backdrop image in the BMP
format, and behold, after converting my desktop image from JPG to BMP, and
using that, I now get my shiny background back after quitting Diablo II.
So... Hopeful news, and I really hope the Glide Wrapper starts working
correctly again under Vista even with Aero enabled...

Thanks for reporting back Patrick, and kudos to Sven.
