Post subject: Deleting Character Files and SimPE
Archived from groups: alt>games>the-sims (more info?)

Hi

I created a neighbourhood called Wrightsville which has all the base
families and Uni students from all the default neighbourhoods. This was done
ages ago before I knew about the dangers of false memories and of course all
the false Sims that are generated.

On checking the character files in SimPE I have 1546 character files 789 of
these are unlinked character files. Now some of these are Sims frrom the
family trees that have become unlinked (I presume through the loss of
tombstones and Urns) but the rest are from the false memories.

I've spent the last couple of weeks deleting the false memories and deleting
the gossip now I'm ready to delete the unwanted character files. My question
is, Do I simply go into the neighbourhood character file and delete the
relevant files or am I supposed to use something in SimPE?

Many thanks for any help or advise.

Best regards
Kathryn

Something bad happens if you delete sims. I'm not entirely sure exactly,
because I really don't use the breeding function of sims much (since I use
aging off), but it does something to their DNA.

However, if you don't care, there is a plugin for SimPE that will let you
delete sims. I think it doesn't delete the Sims DNA, so it avoids that
problem (I think!), but cleans up all the other files.

But anyway, to state the obvious, back up your neighborhood before trying
it.

You need to go to MATY and look for a thread on the subject. There is more
than just deleting the files to get rid of them. You need to reference
certain things in SimPE so you can unlink the hidden links (they'll be
there) and then you can delete. AIUI

Yes I always back my neighbourhoods up (learnt that lesson the hard way
>g<).

The files I'm aiming to get rid of are Sims that never existed in the
neighbourhood so hopefully there won't be any problem. At the moment I'm
following Madam Mim's advice and trawling through MATY's forums trying to
find the relevant info.

Best regards

A couple more things:

Although I didn't see it with Pets, with OFB, about 15 of my sims developed
some sort of problem because of the deleting. They couldn't use certain
objects without causing an error (toilet mostly) and jumping. Happened
only to female sims, teens and adult. But this was fixed by editing their
memories to remove an attraction token. (I have no idea as to the why of
the problem, but that fixes it).

Secondly, if you delete sims, when you load the neighborhood for the first
time after the deleting, it can take some extra time to load. A lot of extra
time in some cases. Just let it load, and the next time it will be back to
normal (if not faster)

Delete them - you can delete those safely. They are relationships which
have become unhitched in some way.

Unknown sim memories are corrupt memories and need to be deleted also.
Mystery sim memories are just the standard memory the game gives CAS made
sims. You can delete them without harm but they will later get 'first kiss'
memories and so on. Don't try to delete the actual Unknown character files
though (you won't be able to do it manually anyway - but don't try it with
SimPE).

Best wishes
