Hi,

I regret to say that the next version of V, 3.1.0, will not be released
before New Year, nor in the January following. There are still too many
bugs hanging around, the server that holds the source code has started
to have unreliable connectivity again, and a bunch of gameplay changes I
wanted to make I just haven't had a block of time to sit down and think
through. I do hope to make a release in February, though.

Cheers,
Andrew Sidwell

I've been playing Crawl a bunch lately, and I gave Angband a try for the
first time in awhile, but I found the dungeon travel rather irritating in
comparison - is there a patch for vanilla, or variant out there that has
something similar to Crawl's autoexplore?

If you turn the option for mouse movement in vanilla on, then clicking the mouse
in an unexplored area will attempt to take you there. Is this the sort of thing
you're looking for?

Somewhat - Crawl's autoexplore is super handy, basically you map it to one
button, then press that button and it autoexplores any darkened/unexplored
areas. It stops the instant anything disturbs it (basically the same as
Angband's autorun stopping on sighting anything interesting). It can also be
configured to autopickup anything on the autopickup list while
autoexploring. The algorithm isn't perfect, as you can map out a level
faster, more efficiently, and usually more safely doing it manually, but it
is a huge real life time saver.

In essence, you mash the button until something interesting shows up, then
you deal with the situation, and go back to mashing it to explore again.
Dangerous areas, you do all manual of course, but it cuts down on the tedium
and (of greater importance to me), the carpal inducing dungeon exploring. I
can't quite handle Angband's massive amount of dungeon roaming comfortably
any more, but I find mouse movement a bit too clunky (though there again,
Crawl has some very smart features, where you can hold the right mouse
button on a minimap in the tiles version to shift the main view, then left
click anywhere to autorun to that point). It also allows you to resume a
targeted autorun if you are interrupted by a hostile monster/trap/etc.

OK, it sounds like something that could be done in Angband, but hasn't yet.
There has recently been a tendency away from clearing levels, and instead using
various types of detection and only visiting interesting looking bits of the
dungeon. Another thing you could consider is playing NPPAngband with smell
levels turned on as a birth option.

Sure, it also auto-buys, auto-fights, auto-runs-away, auto-rests, and
so on. It's called the Borg, and you should be able to set it to let you
do the fights and have it do all the boring stuff between.

The other trick in *band is to set small levels to always on, so
there's really no exploring of note to be done, but that's not in V.

In a distant and second-hand set of dimensions, the words of

How big is the Crawl dungeon? Certainly the Nethack dungeon is about a
sixteenth the size of an average Angband level...

That made me laugh. Are 'smell' levels another one of those terrains that NPP
has? You are autoblinded for the level and have to identify approaching monsters
by their odour. Perhaps you could find the 'Nose of Vecna' which makes you
native to terrains made of smell.

I was just getting confused with Unangband, which has the Dead Marshes....
