"Host 212 has been released. It is the same code as the Host 211b
release, but official this time.
The Borg Bug is fixed in Host 211b/212, but only for newly started
games. Apparently when the issue occurs once, it will keep occuring. I
am anaylzing a way to stop the trend from happening in existing games.
I'm not positive when this bug was actually introduced, but if you
want to be able to continue held games then you may want to try
looking at when Host 211 was installed on your host and roll back the
universe files to a turn before that host processed and continue from
there. The only other alternative is to wait until I or Tim find a way
to stop the issue from occuring in existing games.
I apologize for the inconvenience.

Do you think rolling back is sufficient or do we need to remaster games...

Magik has done wonders. Sometimes it is not worth trying to undo damage
- after all the games will end sometime anyway. I would continue with
the games as they are and accept that the Borg are sneaky, powerful
creatures. All hail the Borg!
When I first started playing VGAP (and a number of other games) I did
not know all the rules. I still remember the sense of wonder / delight /
awe / fear when something unexpected would happen.

Hello Magik-
Do you keep a separate folder of source code for each version, or
perhaps use some software versioning system (Subversion, etc.)? If
so, wouldn't it be possible to do a source diff across versions to see
how/where the Borg bug was introduced, for example?
Obviously it's not that simple, so I'm kind of curious as to how your
process works.
By the way, keep up the good work! You're doing great things for the
game. >> Stay informed about: Dec 7th, 2007 HOST.EXE 4.000.212 |

I keep the versions separated, even subversions that I have a group of
people help me test. I started out researching this bug by doing the
diffs, but it wasn't easily apparent. I did find and fix the bug;
it'll be released in host 213 shortly. It was related to the IMT
Spindizzy code. You can read the details here:
http://vgap.drewhead.org/perl/bb.cgi?a=s&i=1197636345.24291.

It's simple sometimes and others not. The debugging tools built into
the compiler for this game's language are lacking, so I have to take
means that make debugging host runs take hours for even a simple test.

Host 199 surprise - I think something else has changed. In several Sims using a mixed wing, Point Defense weapons seem to target Type 1 until destroyed. Only then do Type 2 take losses and Type 3 will only take losses when all the Type 2s are destroyed. Has anyone else..

Any news about host version 196? - Tim gave us some info about some changes in the next host in january and these changes were discussed here in the newsgroup. But since then nothing happened. Does anyone have any news from Tim? |
