Post subject: Half-Life 2 Deathmatch and firewall
Archived from groups: alt>games>half-life (more info?)

I use Zonealarm as my firewall.

I can play HALF-LIFE 2 with it turned on.

But the other night, for the first time, I tried running the dedicated
server over the Internet, via Steam, so that some buddies could join in on a
game.

I could see the server when I refreshed the list, but they were unable to
see it until I disabled ZoneAlarm.

I'd already approved the Half-Life 2 dedicated server for use over the
internet.... but it seems it wasn't visible to them until I took down the
firewall.

Any ideas on how I can run the server and keep my firewall intact?

I'd prefer not to be unprotected while running the server.

According to some posts I've seen on this subject, you have to re-allow HL2
exe every time there is an update for it through Steam. Try re-allowing it
in ZA, then start your server again.

Thanks for the reply. This seemed like a good plan, but I reallowed it for
Steam, HL2, and the SRCDS.exe in ZoneAlarm, and the result seems the same;
others on Steam can't see my HL2 server.

I'm wondering if HL2 makes use of some other windows service.

Again, for anyone reading this who has suggestions; using ZoneAlarm for a
firewall, I can play HL2 Deathmatch fine as a player, but when I try to run
the HL2 dedicated server, although I can then see it on the list when I'm in
as a player, others cannot.

In Zone Alarm, you may have to enable specific ports for the server to work.
