Could never afford the Atari 800 - think I played it on a mega drive.

(IIRC I did pick up a second hand Commodore 64 when everyone else
thought the 'fad' was over in about 1983).

Did play POP on the PC though - might have been my first ever PC game.

Started PC gaming very early 90's when I begged for an old IBM PS2 that
the Company were throwing out. I still have it in the attic.

Shortly afterwards a friend gave me a floppy with a few games on it (my
first go at piracy I guess). On there was Prince, Wolf 3d and some FPS
with 'Nightmare' in the title (the memory also starts to go at my age)
where you had to make your way through a house or mansion full of bats,
vampires, ghouls etc.

From that moment I was hooked on PC gaming and the never ending upgrade
cycles.

That first upgrade was probably the most expensive as the PS2 just
couldn't be upgraded and I had to go out and buy a whole new PC just so
I could play new games like Doom II and Tie Fighter. That first (and
last) new PC came with IBM's brand new OS called Warp on it which I
tried and quickly changed to Windows.

The rest is history...

[posting again, because my last post choked as the newsserver didn't
like the csipg newsgroup]

By now, the problem seems to be resolved but let me go on a tangent
and talk about DOSBox, the recent version of which (0.72) seems to run
any DOS game from the last 20-25 years without any problems. The only
couple of commands I have to run after starting DOSBox (and even these
I have now added to start script) are,

mount c c:\games (C:\games is where all the installed games go)

mount d i:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl (I is virtual mounted DVD drive
using daemontools)

After that, the games just work. Mouse drivers, CD rom drivers
(MSCDEX), SB16 compatibility, joystick support, XMS/EMS/ProtectedMode
memory, General MIDI/Roland synth etc all work out of the box with no
tweaks needed at all. I can run Strike Commander, Wing Commander (with
speech pack), Ultima7, Bioforge, Crusader, Pandora Directive, Mean
Streets (with Realsound support), XCOM, and Alone in the Dark with
zero issues. In fact, I had more difficulties running the games when
the time they were released, compared to using DOSBox now on a Vista
PC.

Since it's emulation, it's CPU intensive. I recently tried it on an
old Radeon 8500 card, which is of lower spec, than even most of the
built-in graphic support in modern desktops and notebooks. With a
dual-core X2, I didn't notice any slowdowns. That means, it should run
well on most of the cheap $300-400 PCs and notebooks that get sold
today as all of them come with lot more powerful CPUs (compared to the
graphic card)

It really is one of the best PC applications I have ever used. Highly
recommended.

Damn right. It's one of the neatest toys I have on my PCs. The only
problem is that a lot of the late-era DOS games don't run too well
even on modern PCs (e.g., US Navy Fighters, Cybermage) although,
honestly, I never got them to run all that well on late-era DOS
computers either.

Hell, it even has native Gravis Ultrasound emulation built in. The
only thing that would make the experience more complete was if it
offered a boot-menu at start-up to configure memory setups Wink

One day those guys are going to move on to a WinBox emulator and give
us an emulated P3 with 3DFX and GeForce3 emulation built in, just you
wait.

And they say PC gaming is dying...

And I thought *I* was the only one who ever played Karateka! To this
very day I can still hear those *crack* sound effects when you hit
your enemy. Ahhh great game. And I also remember losing at the end
when *SPOILER!!!!!* (LOL) running in to save the princess isntead of
walking. "I don't get it! I beat the boss, how do you save the girl?
What? You're kidding! *walks in* Awesome!!!!*

For 3DFX glide emulation, you can use dgVoodoo. I finished Redguard in
3DFX mode with very high resolution using this emulator. There were no
problems. It emulates both Windows and DOS glide libraries.

What, no love for Shamus (sp?) or Necromancer? Loved those games on
the Atari computers!

Two more.. Miner2049'er and Jumpman.... Wow, those were incredible
games. Necromancer had really cool spooky music. Hard game though.

Oh ya, Shamus, that was a cool game.. Forgot about that one. I don't
remember Necromancer at all though, I must admit.. and I thought I had
just about every Atari game.

Honestly though, there are probably a dozen other gems we're forgetting,
it was 20+ years ago. Wink
