By now, the problem seems to be resolved but let me go on a tangent
and talk about DOSBox, the recent version of which (0.72) seems to run
any DOS game from the last 20-25 years without any problems. The only
couple of commands I have to run after starting DOSBox (and even these
I have now added to start script) are,
mount c c:\games (C:\games is where all the installed games go)
mount d i:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl (I is virtual mounted DVD drive
using daemontools)
After that, the games just work. Mouse drivers, CD rom drivers
(MSCDEX), SB16 compatibility, joystick support, XMS/EMS/ProtectedMode
memory, General MIDI/Roland synth etc all work out of the box with no
tweaks needed at all. I can run Strike Commander, Wing Commander (with
speech pack), Ultima7, Bioforge, Crusader, Pandora Directive, Mean
Streets (with Realsound support), XCOM, and Alone in the Dark with
zero issues. In fact, I had more difficulties running the games when
the time they were released, compared to using DOSBox now on a Vista
PC.
Since it's emulation, it's CPU intensive. I recently tried it on an
old Radeon 8500 card, which is of lower spec, than even most of the
built-in graphic support in modern desktops and notebooks. With a
dual-core X2, I didn't notice any slowdowns. That means, it should run
well on most of the cheap $300-400 PCs and notebooks that get sold
today as all of them come with lot more powerful CPUs (compared to the
graphic card)
It really is one of the best PC applications I have ever used. Highly
recommended.
