Must be a bug... I did exactly that (snuck past the dragon, encounterd
the door and the boulders, spoke to dragon). I've tried every
conversation path with the dragon, with Pia and without. Most of them
end up with the dragon saying, "Well, I hope I like it" (the story).
There is no conversation path that points to an escape, they just
suddenly end.

Ahh.... well, that's sort of what happened. I unlocked the castle
gates, walked around outside... found no way to get to Raventown.
Found the cave, rested, killed the guards, got back into the castle,
confronted the wizard, followed him into the white dragon lair.
