What will happen to the DS system if the battery runs dry? What would
happen to the settings?
Is it necessary to buy another battery or can it be used on household
current only?

I always play the DS on household current. It does save the battery.
The battery cost $15.

I think they're stored on flash memory so they wouldn't be affected.

No, the battery would just recharge normally. My (original) DS has run
out of battery lots of times, and it just recharges fine.

Tim, what I'm saying if the battery goes dry completely, when there is
no more charging that can be done, would be need to buy another battery
or can we use it on household current?

I'm still confused.
So what you're saying I can't use the DS without the battery. So even if
I use the DS on household current, when the battery goes completely dead
I'll have to buy a battery from Nintendo.

You know, Nintendo should have made the unit where you can use the
battery when needed. Where you can insert it into the machine when you
want to use it on the go.

I play with electric current because I never go anywhere, so it would be
a waste of battery time, if I played using the battery.

I think you're worrying too much. The battery will last a long, long time.

The battery has 500 charges. I know that it does last a long time, but
it will last a lot longer if I play it with electric. lol.

Oh, I don't have a garden, so I wouldn't play it there. I live in the
Az. desert. lol

I'm not sure what you meant by 'it doesn't have a counter', but to
clarify that it does have an inbuilt self destruct mechanism:

A charge in a lithium ion battery descreases as soon as it's made. It
loses about twenty percent of it's charge every year even if it's kept
plugged in. Like you said it's also bad idea to drain the battery at all
as this damages it slightly and lessens it's full capacity, the peak
capacity is always decreasing but I'm sure there will be places who
offer up a replacement as the system becomes more popular.

All this talk has just made me realise that the PSP has significantly
less life in it than a DS. Because of it's shorter battery life it's
likely to wear out quicker due to depletion to 0% more often.

It doesn't matter. If it last two years, it's ok by me. I love the DS.
Near Christmas I'm going to purchase the DS Lite.

Let me explain. I live in the country, in a small town. We don't get
water directly to our house. My husband has to go to town and buy water
and bring it back to our house. We do have electric and a phone line. We
wouldn't be able to get on the internet if we didn't have phone lines.
We buy propane to heat our mobile home. I can't say that I like living
here, but right now this is where I live. I have to make the best of it.

Even though I play my DS on household current, it does get charged. I
notice at times the red and green lights are on at the same time. So,
the red light means it's recharging. There are times where only the
green light is on.

Nintendo makes excellent products that last a long time. The DS sytems
should last for years and years, you just need to buy a new battery for
it when needed.

I had the orginal Game Boy and it was still working when I gave it to a
kid that I know. I also have the Game Boy color and that's still
working. I use the GB color to play my older games.

The other day our electric went out because of a storm. I was playing
with my DS at the time. When the electric cut out, the DS's battery
kicked on, so I could have continued playing.
