Thanks for the advice on how to set up the profile. I had been
keeping an old laptop around just so that I could play MOM once in a
while.
One odd thing I've noticed is that when I run the program full screen,
the colors get scrambled. Black appears as red, for example. When I
run in a window that doesn't happen. I can live with that just fine,
but if anyone knoww what is going on, I'm curious about the reason.
I'm using a Thinkpad laptop running Win XP Pro.

Ok, so this is a FAQ. Setting frameskip to 10 makes no noticeable
difference to the animations and allows smooth sound at 9000 cycles.
Nice.
I've tried to run it at home under Linux - same DosBox version (0.63)
and same config. Problem is that the mouse disappears as soon as I
click in the MoM window. Can't do anything (except the F-key screens)
until I release the mouse with CTRL-F10.
Anyone successfully playing MoM in DosBox on Linux? If so please let me
know what kind of mouse setup you have.

Well, I finally got around to playing with this. Success!! Sort of. I got
MOM installed, configured and working, and it is running well in Dos Box.
The only problem is the box is about 4 inches wide.
Any idea how to make it bigger? There's no 'mazimize' on it.

Guys.... Another success story. Got Fantasy General to play with music
& sound. It plays without any real chop @ all! Great game & I'm having
a blast! DOSBOX is truly a miracle.

I've been playing it frequently during the past month as well using
DOSBox. I'm not sure what games would be in my top five games ever but
Master of Magic would be guaranteed a place on it. In the past week
I've managed to complete two impossible campaigns which I was never
able to do previously. It's a nice accomplishment after waiting all
these years.
Currently in the game I'm playing Sss'ra has cast Time Stop. I've
never had this happen from a computer player before: It's annoying! I
thought the game froze initially since he had such a large mana
reserve. For the past ten minutes the game has sat there making a
'click' as if a round was ending every minute or so. This could take
forever. Golly..
While waiting for the wizard to exhaust his mana I've begun to
speculate about various things. Is it possible for a city to rebel
when your tower is within it? Even if ther were no guards and taxes
were set to the highest, could your home base rebel? What would
happen? Would you be banished?

I tried to get both Panzer and Fantasy General to run in DOSBOX under
WIndows 98SE - but both only without sound
Which settings do you use?

I feel once he gets to maintain TimeStop for more than 5-6 turns you're
dogmeat. Because his power base will be growing exponentially with all the
extra nodes and towns he cracks while you get to sit and watch. I've had that
happen to me a couple of times :-\
If you've allowed him to get that big I suspect you have to start casting
Detect Magic frequently and torpedo any Big Nasty Global Enchantments he
attempts. And, ferchrissakes, start taking those nodes away from him BEFORE he
can do it <g>.
I make it part of my trading strategy to peddle away as many expensive spells
as I can that can't be used against me directly. Awareness, Summon Champion,
Wind Mastery, Create Artifact, Heavenly Light - in the hope that tha AI will
piss its mana pool away on those. Mostly works
As they get past that threshold I make it my mission to go 'capitol hunting'.
Getting him banished is almost as good as casting TimeStop, except for his
wandering troopies.

No, I don't think you would lose your capitol. But you wouldn't get any
production from it either, because all the little workers would be out in the
streets, demonstrating, instead of churning out [whatever] goodies.

Well, I too have now got it running in DosBox, in Win2k on my laptop,
WinXP on one desktop and Linux on another - so I can play it anytime,
with sound! I'm also trying an impossible campaign, but I've set magic
power (nodes) to low, which is kind of a cheat (because the AI prizes
nodes quite a lot). So although I'm behind on magic power, it's a lot
less than it might be.

Wow, I've never seen this either. In my game I seem to have only one
wizard on Myrror (the Aztec guy, can't recall his name) - I've bottled
him up in his capital, which is handily on a peninsula. The other three
all appear to be on Myrror, and none of us have taken any towers yet.
I'm just churning out my first Paladins (yes, I'm playing High Men) so
I should be able to take a tower with that.
The only drawback is that the other wizards (with whom I have no
diplomatic relationships, since we've not met yet) are constantly
casting Disjunction so I've given up trying to maintain any globals.
I'm currently researching Incarnation (a lucky rare since I only have
four white books). I read a guide to winning on impossible by "rushing"
to Summon Champion and getting a killer stack of good heroes, but I
think it's rubbish. On Impossible it's all you can do to survive and
spell research goes really slowly for the first couple hundred turns. I
even picked Sage Master instead of my usual Archmage, and it's still
slow.

No. You can't lose your capital except to conquest. You'd just have no
income or production from it, meaning its building maintenance would
need subsidising by your other cities.

Michael: Ok...If you have WIN98...Then you shouldn't really need
DOSBOX. When we refer to DOSBOX...We are not talking about the regular
DOS that's available in WIN98. DOSBOX is a program made for people that
have Windows XP. You see...WINXP doesn't have a true DOS background
like WIN98. Anyway...You should be able to get the music & sound
working in WIN98 for Fantasy General. What type of sound card do you
have?

I just crushed him a few hours ago. Clearing out the nodes eradicated
his power base and even though he managed to start the Spell of Mastery
it was too late. Victory was a matter of crushing his cities
one-by-one at that point. Hoo-ray!

I never considered it that way before. Often I select the Artificer
skill and guard the Create Artifact skill as a last-resort, bargining
chip. Even when I come up against an armed hero from the enemy it's
usually not too difficult to overcome them. Hmm. I'll try trading the
spell in the future with the hope that it'll become a mana sink.

Yeah, that's how I handle the late game: Doing my best to keep them
permanently banned until absolute victory is reached. <g>

Not Windows 98 proper, but Windows 98SE.
