Creative ALchemy, EAX and BSOD

Sorry if the title of this post causes confusion.
It does not refer to Oblivion's in game alchemy.
It refers to the ALchemy add on program from creative for XFi cards running
under vista.
Vista has changed the way that hardware and software interact and removed
components (present in XP) that allow EAX to work.
This is the reason why XFi cards have reduced sound functionality in games
(not Creatives fault)
ALchemy uses OpenAL to restore EAX to games that previously supported it.

ALchemy (when enabled for Oblivion) definitely does make for a better sound
experience.
No problems while playing.
So far, so good.......but
When trying to exit its a different matter.
Oblivion often trips up on exit, but shutting it with task manager posed no
real problem
Now however, every exit is a lockup and closing with task manager causes a
Blue Screen of Death and a reboot.
I am concerned that too many shutdowns like that is asking for serious
corruption of something important eventually so I have turned ALchemy
support off.

Anybody else any experience of this, and a workaround ?
