Archived from groups: rec>games>roguelike>misc (more info?)

Hi

This character is so much better than any of my previous Kofis, I
thought I should post it and ask for some advice.

In particular, should I use the artifact sword (I have no Short Blades
yet) or stick with my trusty spiked flail?

Should I keep the books with me or dump 'em?

And which stat should I be raising?

Cheers
A.

Well, that randart sword is pretty darn good, but:

1. Short blades in general are only useful if you intend
to go the stealth/stabbing/short blades route, and dwarves
are ill-equipped to do that what with abysmal Stealth and
Stabbing aptitudes and poor stealth multiplier. Other than
that, even quick blades of slicing are rather
unimpressive; why would you want to subject monsters to a
slow, painful death of a thousand cuts, when you're
supremely suited to killing them in a couple of mighty
blows?

2. You've already invested in two weapons skills (which
is, as a rule of the thumb, one skill too many). Investing
in a third one, and the one you wouldn't get any discount
on from your existing weapon skills, sounds like a
*terribly* bad idea to me. Crawl rewards specialists, not
generalists. Besides, short blades favour Dex; dwarves
favour Str.

So, if I were you, I'd stick to Maces & Flails.

> Should I keep the books with me or dump 'em?

That depends on whether you intend to pick up Spellcasting
later on. Generally, Hill Dwarves don't, at least not the
good ole "mumble this and wave your hands like that"
spellcasting. Evocations are a whole different story,
though, dwarves are very good at it, but books don't have
anything to do with Evocations.

If you *do* decide on Spellcasting, Cantrips can be very
useful for getting the first few levels of magic skills,
and Wizardry has some useful - albeit high-level - utility
spells. In any case, you shouldn't be carrying those books
with you - either stash them or dump them. Crawl doesn't
have a town level, but there are a couple of good levels
for your stash - Ecumenical Temple and Lair:1.

> And which stat should I be raising?

That doesn't matter too much. Both Axes and M & F are
Str-biased, but Dex is always a good investment, too, and
you also might want to get some extra safety cushion
against orange crystal statues by spending your points on
Int.

> Inventory:
> Hand weapons
> a - a +1,-1 dwarven hand axe

Dump.

> v - an uncursed great mace

That's what you should be using. Great flails are even
better, but not by much.

> w - the +3,+4 short sword "Niw V" (weapon)
> (You found it on level 8 of the Dungeon)

Nifty, but not really meant for this character.

> K - a +4,+4 dwarven spiked flail

Keep it for dealing with the jellies.

> P - an uncursed elven falchion

Dump.

> Z - an uncursed orcish hand axe

Dump.

> Missiles
> F - 24 darts
> J - 20 orcish darts

These are not poisoned - dump. Carrying a few poisoned
needles with you is a better idea.

> Armour
> b - a +0 dwarven scale mail

Stash.

> c - a +0 dwarven shield (worn)

Shields are not really worthwhile in b26.

> k - a +3 scale mail (worn)
> B - a +0 pair of gloves (worn)
> E - a +0 pair of boots (worn)
> R - a +1 cloak (worn)

> Magical devices
> t - a brass wand

Use-ID.

> A - a wand of disintegration

Carry it with you at all times. It's the ultimate in
dealing with statues.

> G - a wand of draining
> N - a wand of random effects

Use it on fleeing monsters to get some Evocations skill.
Once you have Evocations, you could use acquirement for
staves to get a rod (of destruction, hopefully, or, even
better, of warding).

> Comestibles
> j - 2 apples
> u - 3 meat rations
> I - 6 bread rations

Stash bread rations.

> Scrolls
> h - 3 scrolls of identify

Stash. (Jeez, we really need Erik here with his course of
lectures on stashing. Smile

> x - 9 scrolls of teleportation

WAY too many.

> y - a scroll of noise

Might be useful for getting your first level of
Spellcasting. If you do not intend to go the Spellcasting
route, dump.

> D - a scroll of detect curse
> U - 4 scrolls of remove curse

Stash.

> Y - a scroll labeled FYNIM NOMILOV

Use-ID in the ET.

> Jewellery
> H - an amulet of resist slowing (around neck)
> M - an uncursed ring of sustenance (left hand)
> S - a ring of protection from fire (right hand)
> T - a ring of sustenance

Nifty jewellery. You can probably dump the second
sustenance, though.

> Potions
> W - 3 potions of invisibility
> X - 4 potions of healing

> Books
> O - a book of Cantrips
> Q - a book of Wizardry

Stash or dump.

> You have 100 experience left.
>
> Skills:
> + Level 6 Fighting
> + Level 6 Axes

Turn off.

> + Level 9 Maces & Flails

Generally, it's a bad idea to invest in more than one
weapons skill. There are some exceptions, but Axes 6, M &
F 9 is definitely not one of them.

> + Level 1 Throwing
> + Level 5 Armour
> + Level 5 Shields

I would advise either dumping your shield or, at the very
least, turning this skill off.

> You have 7 spell levels left.
> You don't know any spells.

And that's really as it should be, even though Okawaru
doesn't mind Spellcasting...

That's a good sword and you could make it work even without
stealth/stabbing, but you would need slaying bonuses from
rings/randarts and develop unarmed for extra punches and headbutts.

>
> And which stat should I be raising?

If you're going to be using the short sword, raise dexterity.
If you're going to be trying spellcasting, raise intelligence.

If you're going to be using a great mace (or other mace, or some axe),
raise strength -- every 4 points of strength above 10 raise the base
damage of the weapon by 10%.

This will not mean much for the short sword (that's why you need
slaying bonuses to enhance your damage), but with a great mace's 16
base damage you will get 21 base damage due to your high strength. When
you start multiplying that by fighting/weapon skill bonuses, it can
grow very fast.

I would go with strength.

I would use the spiked flail until your mace skill gets a little higher
and you find some heavier armor (like plate mail) so that you can take
more hits and not die -- then switch to great mace.
Or you could go with the spiked flail to the end -- it is a good
one-handed weapon, you've already enchanted it well and it is dwarven
for you.

This is better than the +4, +4 dwarven spiked flail below?

What's the advantage of not using a shield?

We don't know the enchantment on it, so at the moment it
might be a bit worse, - the point is, it's much better in
a long run because of how brands work in Crawl - it has
much higher base damage, which is a Good Thing indeed.
Note that Crawl is not so much about min-maxing as *bands
are. Equipment optimization is somewhat important, but
when in doubt, pick the chunk of metal with the highest
base damage (in your weapon class, of course).

The advantage is not dumping your valuable XP into a
useless skill. It's better spent elsewhere. Another
advantages are:

1. Higher weapon speed. (It's a straight +10 for using a
shield, +20 for using a large shield, and it applies
*after* the speed cap. So if your speed tops at 40 without
a shield, it tops at 50 with it.)

2. Auxiliary unarmed punches.

3. 1.5h bonus on your hand-and-halfers (note that you can
get both this and unarmed punches, which is why
hand-and-halfers are much-desired).

4. Better spell failures if you ever decide to pick up
Spellcasting.

5. Ability to use rods (rods are two-handed and they rock,
pure and simple).

Basically, unless you want a challenge, there isn't a
single good reason to go with the shields, and lots of
reasons not to.

If you really *really* concentrate on strength over dexterity, a hand
axe can be worth keeping (though probably a classier one than that), as
it's highly-enough strength-weighted to keep the game from generating
"you should be more nimble" message spam when you swap it in during
autobutcher. Smile

In the short term, maybe not. In the long term, easily. If you choose
it as your weapon to vorpalise and enchant up (you can usually only
afford to concentrate on one in a normal-length game), it'll pass far
above +4,+4, although it'll be better than a +4,+4 spiked flail
somewhat before that.
