Hubris got me this time, and oh it hurts. Xenon the Demonspawn Air
Elementalist was rolling along pretty well owing mostly to a longsword
of slicing pulled off Terence on the 3nd level and an unusual number of
spellbooks found just lying around on the ground. Oh, and he already had
an amulet of the gourmand and a ring of sustenance. My plan at this
point was to start milking poison cloud for all it was worth through the
Lair and Elven Halls and switching over to freezing cloud for the Swamp
and Snake Pit.

I felt like I should have smooth sailing ahead pretty much through the
mid game, but there were two small problems frustrating me. I couldn't
seem to find any resists or, more importantly, the entrance to the Lair.
I'd already cleared the Mines, which I usually save for after the lair,
and had just found the Hive on DL 13. I would have been happy to clean
out the Hive at this point but just couldn't risk it with so few HP and
no poison resistance.

So I figured I'd just map out all of DL 13, make sure the Lair wasn't on
this level, then work back up to see if I'd missed it. I even had the
option of learning magic mapping if it came down to it. But then I came
across this vault formation:

#.######.######
#.#....#.#...D#. F
#.#.[..'.#....# C
#.#..[.#C+..=.# a
#.#....#.#.Y.J#H I
#.######.######
#.#....#.#....#.
#.#....'.'...[# #
#.#....#@#....#. S
#.######.#....#.
#.#....#.######H
#.#....#.#....#. c J
#.#....'))....#.#
#.#....#.#....# c G
#.######^######H#
#{.......}{{{{#. G GGBB B
############### #

I figured at this level the D in the upper room would be a hydra and the
C would be another cyclops. So I'm thinking swiftness, deflect missiles
+ bolt of poison/cold == free XP! Yay! I opened the door to the room
with the = and the D in it ...and hmmm... that D is a shadow dragon!
It's not interested in me... OK well let's just close the door and
pretend we never saw each other. Detect creatures, OK it's not moving,
next room then.

Hmmm... that C is a Titan! I don't remember ever seeing those anywhere
but the bottom of the Vaults. (Here's where hubris kicks in...) I WONDER
IF I CAN CONFUSE HIM. Mephitic cloud, um... gulp... nope. LET'S POISON
AND RUN THEN. Poison bolt - BLAM - lightning in return. RUN AWAY!

At this point my brain simply stopped working. As you can see in the
character dump I had a couple of scrolls of blinking, so there's no
reason at all I couldn't have escaped this situation, never mind that I
shouldn't have been in it in the first place. Instead I just ran like a
scared rabbit and got gunned down a few steps later. Sigh.

I think this is as far out of depth as I've ever seen something so far
in Crawl.

Is it just me, or are these "prison cell" vaults the nastiest in the
game?

I had a very promising DSCK nearly killed by a shadow dragon in one of
these just the other day. (Then I stupidly decided to change armor on
an uncleared level and was pummelled to death by an orc warior. Oh
well...)

You'd better believe it. Once I ran a Crusader who, at the bottom of
Cocytus, ran into someone who'd died there, and had more trouble with
that ghost than with the level populace per se. Ouch!

I think seeing it on d1 is less traumatic since you don't lose any
invested time and you don't wind up with a bones file. My next promising
character, a Makhleb-worshipping Black Draconian Gladiator, recognized
this vault level, dove past it, and then died to a Dragon on _another_
vault level (the hive-type one). This after he took out a Gold D and a
Shadow D on the same level. I've got a couple of killer bones files
sitting around now...
