I have to share the extraordinarily nifty mutation list on my freshly
fragged grey draconian chaos knight.

Two levels of fire resistance, three levels of cold resistance, single
neg and poison resistance. So what kills him? Electricity, of course,
in the form of ricocheting Titan lightning, a classic case of not
backing out of a vault in time. The morguefile reads "HP -74/334",
which pretty much says it all.

Armour
+v - a +2 wizard's hat (worn)
+w - a +6 gold dragon armour (worn)
+A - the -1 cloak of Wonder (worn)
It greatly protects you from cold.
It partially protects you from negative energy.
It makes you much more stealthy.
Jewellry
+f - an amulet of rage (around neck)
+g - a +4 ring of protection (left hand)
+t - a +4 ring of evasion (right hand)
Skills:
- Level 11 Armour
- Level 4 Dodging

This summed to a total of AC 45 Ev 8 - being a 22nd level grey draco,
he had substantial protection from his own scales. Getting Armour up
to 11 cost a lot of XP given a draco's skill shortcomings there, but
was worth it... still with Ev of only 8 he was taking a lot of hits
from bolts of draining and lightning, both of which cost him dearly.
In retrospect, he should have spent more time trainng Dodging before
diving to Titan and Shadow Dragon depth.

The gold dragon kit came from a hide found in the first ten levels, and
proved irresistable.

Hand weapons
+a - a +8,+9 executioner's axe of freezing (weapon)
Skills:
+ Level 17 Fighting
- Level 2 Short Blades
+ Level 19 Axes
- Level 10 Maces & Flails
+ Level 2 Stabbing
+ Level 18 Unarmed Combat

Xom started him with a short sword, which he quickly swapped for a
flail. After ten levels of blunt weapon work, however, Xom saw fit to
gift him with the huge cold-branded axe, then at +2,+3. The draco took
the hint and changed careers, counting on Unarmed and tail spikes to
take out hydras.

And he was very effective in Unarmed. Check out this dream Draco
mutation list:

Mutations & Other Weirdness
Your muscles are strong (Str +2).
You are agile (Dex +2).
You are surrounded by a mild repulsion field (ev + 1).
[really useful for a ponderous beast in Gold Dragon kit]
You digest meat inefficiently.
[but could still eat chunks. not a problem]
Your flesh is heat resistant.
Your natural rate of healing is unusually fast.
You are dopey (Int -2).
You can control translocations.
Space sometimes distorts in your vicinity.
[but not so often as to make him glow from control, fortunately]
Armour fits poorly on your deformed body.
[acquired shortly before death, reducing AC to 38]
You can translocate small distances instantaneously.
You have a pair of small horns on your head.
You possess an exceptional clarity of mind.
Your body is slowly deteriorating.
You are robust (+10 percent hp).
Your tail ends in a sharp poisonous barb.
[poison and improved damage]
Your wings are large and strong.
[Controlled Flight]

"Deformed body" was a gift of a pair of giant orange brains in the
fatal vault, a terrible twist for an Armour-dependent character like
this. The rest was mostly Xom: horns on a character that can't wear
helmets anyway, two levels of tail mutation on top of a grey draco's
already good tail attack, improved wings, perma-clarity,
perma-tele-control, healing, heat resistance....

Which is why deformed body was so devastating. I was so charmed by
having achieved two levels of tail mutation that I might have ditched
the painstakingly forged +6 gold and reverted to a Dodging-based
character, rather than risk resetting some of the good stuff. Maybe.

Anyway, Xom aka the RNG gives, and the RNG takes away. Thus always
with Crawl.

Yep, with such a great mutation list, doing back to doding would be
best. And fighting a titan with 8 ev and no electricity resistance is
asking for trouble.

I didn't know Xom could give mutations! maybe I'll try a Xom-worshipper.

I take this advice -- get a polearm-wielding demonspawn, get bloodlust
necklace, buy a great +3 damage splint mail, plow through the lair with
a hellwing raising more zombies than I can fit through the stairs,
learn unarmed and rip hydras to shreds, and get drained of 6
intelligence by a statue -- dead.

It seems like the demonspawn mutation RNG gives you 2-3 levels of the
same mutation at the same time -- when you're supposed to only get 1
level at a time, right?

Dungeon Crawl version 4.0.0 beta 26 character file.

Of course Xom can give mutations. It wouldn't miss such a fine
opportunity to play with its toys!

Serious mutation fans, of course, play Demonspawn Chaos Knights of Xom.

I've just killed, mmm, maybe my 50th Demonspawn Xomite Chaos Knight. Or Xom
killed him. Who knows, but it's always a laugh finding out just how you're
going to die. Last attempt found rings of fire and cold protection on D:1,
an armour of poison resistance on D:2, and got some nice +AC scales and fire
breathing and horns on his first level-up mutation somewhere on D:3. And
died of starvation on DL:4. No, I don't know how either.

How I laughed Smile

Depends on the mutation. Demonspawn mutation will still give you only
one level of heat/cold resistance or quickness, but mostly 2-3 levels of
horns, scales, repulsion field (1-2 levels of horns when that's your
first mutation, and no more than 3 levels of scales in total). Also,
Demonspawn mutations are immune to !oRM, and there are no bad ones; of
course a few ambivalent (horns for spellcasters, torment resistance for
necromancers) or marginal (self-banishment to Pan) ones, but none
outright bad.
