998803 MilkmannDa MiBe-25 escaped with the Orb!

Good for him. Took me about a month before I broke my New Year's
resolution.

I had another MiBe going but the mutations were so bad that I gave him
up and started this one. I went with light armor + dodging and used
aquirements on rods. I should've made more use of abjuration (more than
not using it at all) and maybe summoning for blockers but I did use
repel missiles a lot. I got some use from bolt of cold and fire but
wands are handier if you can spare the charges.

MiBes have an interesting endgame. I don't remember ever coming so
close to dying on Zot 5. I ended up teleporting a lot. Finally I
teleported right next to the Orb, stupidly went berserk, and nearly
died there with the Orb.

One odd thing about the game was that I found maybe four or five
artifact bows. A couple or three had no special ability, one let me
teleport (if I remember right), and one had sense surroundings. I kept
the one of speed, which turned up in the midgame. The item haul in
general was poor to fair-- no really interesting weapons or armor, not
even a hat. Which is good, really. I suspected that my earlier win with
a MiBe hinged on the excellent items in that game. Trog did come
through early on with an artifact hammer that granted poison
resistance.

I also wanted to run a MiBe through as it seemed a long time since
anybody's posted a VP with one. Erik messed that up a little with his
recent Troll berserker speed run post, but eh.

Dungeon Crawl version 4.0.0 beta 26 character file.

You feel less fatigued.
There is a stone staircase leading upwards here.

a - a +9,+7 dwarven great mace of crushing (weapon) (2932 gold)
b - the +5,+0 bow "Vovpnfraaawodi" (405 gold)

//Magic resistance worked out OK. At least I didn't get sent to the
Abyss or anything like that. I would've preferred fire or cold, though.
Speaking of resistances, I never found a handy source of insulation,
not that it mattered. Decent evasion plus repel missiles meant not
having to worry much about resistances in general. Fire orbs and
electric golems were still worth worrying about, just not *in general*.
You have to worry about each specific one, at least with standard

It affects your intelligence (+3).
It lets you turn invisible.
It lets you sense your surroundings.

D - the +3 pair of boots of the Armoured One (worn) (487 gold)
It protects you from fire.
It protects you from poison.
It makes you much more stealthy.

is handy for melee specialists.

Grats! Smile

One question -- how did you train both skills that high? Obviously you
weren't wearing elven armour all the time?

And another one -- why light armour at all? Just to keep dodging
training? AFAIK, non-light armour is MUCH more efficient at stopping
damage...

Wonder how long it will take me to pick my hat back up after I hang up
my hat as planned a couple of victories from now. Smile

Most mutations can't kill you outright, but if the game is no longer
fun, you'll probably kill yourself if you even find it in you to
continue at all. No idea if I'd've finished with the GEAE if it hadn't
been for the contest -- maprot is pretty nasty psychologically.

Whilst sneakily suppressing stealth -- where Minotaurs are doubly
disadvantaged -- via the wearing of the heaviest light armour. Cool.

Huh. I guess it also depends on a given race's supply of MP -- with a
Kobold Bevoker, I was flinging destruction around right and left.

Berserking is a very good way to kill yourself in general.

Bows are cool. Smile A little redundant on a bevoker, but cool.

Well, it wasn't a Minotaur and it wasn't really a Berserker, so hey.

Minotaurs can afford a little slack, that's a nice thing about them.

Wow. I noticed a very high Armour skill below -- what part of the game
did you spend in heavy armour?

With no electricity resistance, the key with electric golems is to have
a lot of HP to spare and to smash them quickly, which fortunately isn't
terribly hard.

> i - a wand of random effects (11) (138 gold)
> //Must've been autopickup.

Ahh, they're OK for fleeing enemies. Zot generally demands leaving them
out for reasons of weight, though, except as XP sinks when you don't
have a rod.

> //The standard three-rune victory has for me become the standard

Certainly of the extra-rune areas, it's the easiest, unless you're a
mummy or such or you have plentiful magic mapping and good cold
resistance, in which Cocytus rivals it (but then, good cold resistance
does wonders for Slime too).

> + Level 7 Evocations

Pretty low for a bevoker!

> //I had maces and flails off quite a bit. I'm pretty sure this is my

Probably just lots and lots of skills, and not many bonus areas.

> I see I should've had throwing off.

It's not ENTIRELY useless past the 50% mark, you know.

> The ghost of Ozzy the Dodger, a powerful Mf Wz (Orc:3)

How did that turn out (other than the dying part)?

> 48 dancing weapons (Blade)

Usually not worth it anyway, unless you're a swordsman still looking
for a sword of speed and having decided not to cross their fingers for
a katana/double sword/triple sword.

> A wandering mushroom (Vault:3)

Ooh.

> 3083 creatures vanquished.

A rather peaceful berserker.

Congratulations again!

Heh, I'll happily sit by on the sidelines watching people cheer STR,
STR-weapons, and heavy armour and winning with DEX, DEX-weapons, and
light armour... Smile

(Heavy armour certainly stops a lot of damage. It had better, because
you get lots and lots of damage to stop. DEX weapons certainly go light
on the damage. For game balance's sake they had better, 'cause you dish
out lots and lots of damage to go light on. Etc. Things are not always
what they seem.)

I wore ring mail > chain mail > splint > and settled for banded mail of
poison resistance, IIRC, although there may have been a scale mail or
orcish plate in there too. I trained armor in the usual way (for me,
anyway)-- when there's a food glut, XP pooled, and enemies, let them
beat on me until I'm at around 65-75% HP then go berserk to heal up.

> And another one -- why light armour at all? Just to keep dodging

It was mainly just to see if it worked. I liked having decent amounts
of both AC and evasion. It did work, too. Of course, so does high
evasion and low AC and vice versa. It was a third way to go for MiBes,
who turn out to be more versatile than you might think. Er, versatile
as in "let's not talk about spells, ever, unless it's resistance-- and
even then I'd rather not."

Thinking on it now and considering how the items were, I might've been
exactly right to follow that path. On the other hand, I did manage to
lay hands on a couple of storm dragon hides, although probably not
until too late, as in post V:8. I used to play heavy armor MiBes quite
a lot and electricity resistance was big. I remember draining from
shadow dragons was a concern for me then and it really wasn't this
time, despite not using any protection, even as a swap in.

Well, I'm certainly not playing like I was at the end of '05. I'm
thinking I might give Lost Labyrinth or NetHack a go. Or not.

Yeah, I just folded on that one because it got to be more annoying than
fun.

Yet having pretty good stealth from items, which handy.

Yeah, and play style. Mine's pretty lazy. It's fewer keystrokes to
shoot an arrow.

Pretty much the whole early and mid. I made the switch in the Elven
Halls, after training armor up to 15.

Hm, I didn't manage that. The only one I saw ran/blinked away after
helping to mess me up pretty badly.

It's the evil I know. I still haven't seen more of Hell than the
vestibule.

I didn't work at it. I was happy with repel missiles and that's it.

Yes, but... I've had some characters who were a lot more diluted and
they still managed to max out at least one skill. Seems curious.

Pretty well, up to a point. I was keen to see what I could do with Oz's
Armour and Blink. The drawback was having to scum-start so I gave up.
Plus I didn't have much of a strategy beyond "let's see what I can do
with Oz's Armour and Blink."

Yeah, you can count on finding a distorter in there... still, if you
really have your heart set on a particular type or brand or you've been
unlucky it's worth a look.
