After a month of colourful and spectacular repeated YASDs with
everything from Centaur Hunters through to Ghoul Necromancers,
Machiavelli the Trog-worshipping Mountain Dwarf Berserker finally
escaped with the Orb. It was also the first game in which I managed to
reach Zot.
A few close shaves towards the end:
On Zot:5 I'd cleared the whole level except one of the rooms to one
side of the Orb chamber. I then carelessly let myself get caught in a
post-berserk slow state with two Ancient Liches who wasted no time in
gating in their '1' buddies, who gated in their '2' buddies, and so
on. Figuring that there was only one uncleared unvisited room left, I
decided to teleport. Surely there wasn't much chance I'd end up in
that very room? Of course that's exactly where I ended up, and got
blasted from all sides by electric golems and fire orbs. Teleported
again. Got displaced all of two squares to the left, much to the
amusement of the golems who continued their onslaught. With health
down to the 50s I teleported a third time. Landed near the up stairs.
Whew. Good thing I had triple fire resistance.
The trip back up with the Orb was nerve-wracking and made Nethack's
endgame seem like a walk in the park in comparison. Ended up with
health under 100 a couple more times before getting out. Didn't know
it was possible to develop a phobia of digits, but I never want to see
a brown '1' on a black background again as long as I live!
