Post subject: -Crawl SS- YAAD: Demigod Monk slain by evil, mass-generating orcs
Archived from groups: rec>games>roguelike>misc (more info?)

Jason the Demigod Monk was an unstoppable killing machine of justice.
He had a great mix of skills, plenty of neat equipment, and lots of
potential. That was, until the ambush...

After successfully defending himself against yet another group of orcs
in the Orcish Mines and looting their gold, he decided it was time to
revisit an armor shop he'd spotted earlier, for some nifty items. He
was somewhat wounded, but he'd only have to pass through rooms he'd
already cleared out, and had been in only recently. And, if a couple
or so orcs showed up, they'd be no trouble. But alas, the Random
Number God had other plans.

Jason cautiously crept up the stairway. To the east, he spotted a
single, common orc. He'd seen this happen before--sometimes, an enemy
(MAYBE two or three) would be found exploring a room he'd already
cleared. So, foolishly dropping his guard, he approached. He then saw
another orc, and orc wizard, and an orc priest. "Okay, this is still
no problem." He quaffed his last healing potion, and ran to attack the
orks blocking his way out, taking care to havea rock pillar between
himself and the orc priest as long as possible.

Then, something he couldn't expect happened--the wizard had a dagger
that was able to rip poor Jason to pieces, even through his
usually-effective armor. His life was quickly being lost, chunk by
chunk, and he had to make a choice: Use an item to turn invisible, or
to become berserk. Both seemed like cruddy ideas, but Jason knew that
if he berserked, he'd be able to slay the three remaining enemies
blocking his path, and he'd also heal up a little. So, Jason
berserked, and killed the orcs that were trying to kill him, one by
one.

Victorious but badly injured, Jason moved on a little further. And
just as he felt his strength begin to subside, he saw another orc
wizard, another orc priest, and a common orc with a runed halberd.
"This would be a great time to turn invisible." Jason passed out, and
the orcs moved in for the kill...

This is what happens when you let your guard down against those you
expect to be in fewer numbers. I guess now I know that orcs can be
regenerated in mass, at least in the mines. Bad luck and bad decisions
on my part lead to another annoying death.

Well, not for fun, just trying to find a way to complete the game with

Sorry to hear this story. I had an answer but it didn't show up. So
next try...

[snip sad tale of orc band after orc band generated until Monkie drops]

Now you see why perhaps invisibility would have been superior to
berserking.

Why did you prefer the mail over the robe?

Not heard often but: probably not enough wands...

You had _blinking_. No death with that in store.

Any reason not to wear the amulet? Together will levitation (which
makes you faster? I never know) this could actually have been sensible.

Drop the useless ones.

Berserking -- your great way to make a mediocre situation awesome and a
bad situation deadly. Smile

Unarmed is good, weapons are also good. But it looks more like he was
just hoovering, which is his prerogative, after all. But then, as a
hooverer, I *would* say that.

Having at least one weapon of venom is quite understandable due to
their effectively giving you an effective armour class of three zillion
as long as you've got room to run. Deliberately having three in two
different skill groups is a bit less understandable, but we don't know
if it was deliberate.

Even I wouldn't call that enough wands. Smile Most notably missing is at
least one top-tier attack wand (ideally with a known charge count) of
some sort.

He'd fallen unconscious. "Berserking - your..."

(This is my biggest problem with B0rsuk's "amulets of Rage are too
ueber" schtick.)

Levitation only makes you faster if you've got Swiftness active. All
four points of speed thus gained (well, points of movement cost thus
lost) are for movement only, BTW.

Flight plus non-potion levitation is a nice way to boost your carrying
capacity, though. Smile

And store the mutation until you've got a reserve of Cure Mutation.

Good luck with that--sounds vaguely like my attempts with Demigod JOATs.

I carried them because they can be (and were) quite handy. Don't feel
confident beating a big ogre with sheer force? Poison him with a
dagger of venom a few times to help out. Going into a room that you
know could be swarming with orc warriors? Wield a weapon of protection
so they can't get you moving through the stairs. And having a few
blades to throw at a fleeing enemy that just pissed you off, and will
only come back to hurt you some more, can help (which is why I learn
magic missile, even with fighters, when I can).

I was training both armor and dodging. At the time I died, I was
training armor.

Poor luck with wands, I guess?

I don't think it makes you faster without a certain wind spell. And, I
didn't see the use--having a little help with magic seemed more
important that floating over relatively weak traps.

I was going to keep those in case, for some reason, I had the desire
and opportunity to learn Evaporate.

As I had the misfortune of finding out with experience.

Extra weapons make for good projectiles. And, it seems, I'm a
hooverer.

Again, bad luck finding wands.

Correct.

I never feel comfortable storing items outside my inventory. I
probably should start putting destructable in the Temple when I get the
chance from now on, though.

Thanks for the comments and tips, everyone!

BTW my comment was a little misleading -- *any* source of levitation
will boost your carrying capacity, and will do so regardless of whether
or not you have flight. However, having flight makes it vastly less
annoying, and having it from a non-potion source makes it actually
practically useful. You'll generally want to be able to use it over and
over again when you use it this way, not just a couple times for a
potionsworth of turns each.)

The item-finding features (Ctrl-F) in the Patch (and thus in Crawl S as
well) ensure that there's no danger of losing things you've stashed, if
that's what you mean.

Things you're carrying but not using are dead weight. For a hooverer,
that can mean hitting Encumbered a lot more often. Potions and scrolls
in your inventory, specifically, are at risk of freezing/burning. Those
that aren't, aren't. No need to subject them to that if they're not of
"tactical" use. Note that freeze risk is nonexistent in the core branch
of the lair, and burn risk is very low in its side branches.

The Temple is a nice stash place. The Lair entrance staircase is a
nicer one -- less travel time for the bulk of the game, and almost as
easy to type as the Temple is ("ctrl-g l <enter>" from outside the
Lair; "ctrl-g d <enter>" from within it.). (Animals don't have hands.)
