Well, that was... unexpected. Is it a Xom's trick or just an extremely
out-of-depth monster?

Ouch. I've been trying to get a Xom-worshipping Demonspawn Chaos Knight
to win for absolutely ages, and ridiculously out of depth things like
this aren't uncommon, I'm afraid. Recently on the first three or four
dungeon levels I've had centaurs; packs of tough orcs; a gila monster; a
great orb of eyes; a *shapeshifter* for goodness sake..

Empirically I think worshipping Xom makes for a higher chance that
unusually nasty monsters will turn up early, but also particularly good
items. I don't know whether the source code confirms this though.

Love from
Jennifer

[Dragon on D:1]

It's an extremely OOD monster, independent of Xom. There is a miniscule
chance on any level of an extremely OOD monster being generated
(miniscule *per level*, large enough with a large player base and lots
of started games to be discussed on rgrm every few months); too lazy to
check, but I believe it's an absolute increase rather than relative, as
this would explain why posts discussing it over the years discuss its
occurence in the beginning, and especially on level 1 (where the
relative OODness would be the greatest, with an absolute increase to
OODness).

I also don't know offhand if it's during level generation or during
respawn. During respawn is more forgiveable, heck, even somewhat
sensible -- think "mummies" and think "scumming D:1 until your eyes
bleed because it's safe to do." But again, I don't know if that's
really the logic.

Just speaking of Xom and unlikely things and whatnot, I had a
Demonspawn Chaos Knight of Xom once, and on the first dungeon and
experience level, Xom granted him a +5, +7 Katana. He pretty much
kicked @$$ after that, except he was overrun in the Lair.....
