Dwarvo, my level 12 dwarven fighter was just now hovering near his
stash in the temple trying to decide whether to keep hold of his
scroll of recharging or leave it behind. With the words "I'm probably
not going to need it and I can always come back for it," he dumped it
into the pile and dived down into the orcish mines.

Only to immediately get trapped in an unconnected dungeon branch with
no way to teleport. But wait! Dwarvo still had his trusty wand of
digging and there was only a single wall between him and the connected
bits! He zapped the wand.

"Nothing appears to happen."

D'oh!!

Isn't the first entrance to the Mines always an unconnected dungeon
branch anyway?

Best,

Unless things have changed in Stone Soup, no, it isn't -- it's just as
possible for the area around the entry staircase to include all six
stone staircases as it is for the case with just one stone staircase
(the one you arrived on) that you mention. Not just as likely -- the
most likely scenario will be somewhere in the middle, with 2-3
reachable stone staircases -- but just as possible.
